Ferrell's Story
I spent my life doing what I liked in high school; working in radio and television. I was a radio reporter in Lexington, Norfolk, Va., and Louisville. I worked as a reporter/videographer for WAVE-TV in Louisville, and was assigned to the State Capitol for 17 years. I covered the governor, state politics and the big statewide story of the day. I reported from all 120 counties in Kentucky and had more than 150 stories used by NBC.
I left WAVE in 1991 and returned to school to earn a master's degree in mass communications at the University of South Carolina. I taught for one year at USC; another year at Georgia Southern and returned to Kentucky to teach at Eastern Kentucky University, where I stayed 16 years until I retired from academia in 2010. I still host a weekly public affairs program on Kentucky Educational Television, 'Comment on Kentucky'. I've also worked as the election-night political analyst for WLEX-TV in Lexington since 2000. The biggest highlight of my professional career was being inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame in 2006.
I was married to the love of my life, Cinda, for 33 ...Expand for more
years. She was from Cincinnati, and we met at UK just before she graduated in 1969. She died in 2006. We had two sons, Chad and Dale. Chad lives in Versailles, married a pharmacist from Harlan, and is a safety consultant for the Ky. Dept. of Labor. He's a UK grad. Dale is the head men's basketball coach at Alfred University, an NCAA school in New York state. He married a New Yorker who was a high school and college lacrosse star, and she also works at Alfred. Her maiden name is Farrell, so I attended the Farrell-Wellman wedding. Dale graduated from Sewanee in Tennessee and has a master's in sports administration from EKU. He's six hours short of a second master's from the University of Georgia. He also coached at Kenyon, Union (NY), Williams College, and EKU. He was an assistant to Travis Ford when EKU played UK in the NCAA tournament.(We had great seats!)
I like to travel, visit zoos and historic spots and watch college basketball (especially D-III). I attend major league baseball games when I can. I'm still searching for the perfect hot dog; although the 'white hots' in Rochester, NY come very close.
