Floyd Ned's Story

Life It was a roundabout way that I came to this sudden conclusion. I decided to write. Yet as the words flowed freely in my head, there seemed to be a backup that led to my hand, so I abandoned the pen without so much as a jiggle of the handle. I had so many ideas, thoughts, images that were running rampant in my head, waiting patiently until the next number was called so they could see the light of day. Too bad they were blind. I stumbled upon something that was quite unexpected, and it was waiting for me. And it told me, "Life, is like a giant turd, floating in the air above your house. You know it's there, and it astounds you. Everyday you walk outside, not knowing when, if and how that tagnut will drop. Yet you continue everyday, with that load over your shoulder, day in and day out, expecting it to fall". "Yeah", it said, "Life is kinda like that". - Boulderdash School High School sucked for me. But, if I could do it over again, I would. And I would tear through there like I always wanted to. To have the confidence I somewhat have now. To actually have the courage to make that move when that certain opportunity was presented to me. Yep. Knowing what I know now, I really screwed up my years in High School. Maybe I'll write a novel about that topic. Yeah...maybe. College Well crap, where to begin? Undergrad sucked. My success at socialization carried over from H.S. Not easy when you drive an orange piece of crap like that Datsun I had. Yeah, real cool there Mongo. Anyway, I finally met that one person that was able to break through my self conscious wall. Actually, she smashed through with a sledgehammer. Guess that's what it took. I changed majors like I changed beer stained shirts, and decided on communications. Savor that for a minute. Me. Who stuttered so bad, Mel Tillis would have said, "Damn, slap that kid"! To doing a radio show playing everything from Yanni to Nona Hendrix to Chris Rea to Cusco. It was then that I realized that life would not be about money, but what I liked to do and that part of it that made it easy. Big mistake. Money rocks. I yearn for it. Grad school. Holy pope on a rope! Not only was that tough. It was fun. Not only did I teach classes (well, the production aspect of the classes), I ran the TV studios. All that and took classes. And did it in 2 years. Met some beautiful people there that made me thankful I was a man and grateful that I was married....Expand for more
You know who you are. Thanks. Workplace Got a job straight out of Grad school. Guess. Give up? A UPN affiliate in Oklahoma City. Man, that was a kick in the balls. They're still ringing as of this day. Ting-a-ling you son of a.... Well, anyway, I was there during the Murrah bombing. Actually was working the shows (babysitting ala master control op). Went to work at UCO. Wanted to teach. Asked several times. Never given the chance. Screw you guys then. Got out of there via a contract job with the state doing videos for companies in Oklahoma. Anyone interested in knowing how to castrate a piglet, I now know. Was there when the May 3rd F-5 hit. Then later, something else hit. My contract wasn't renewed. No job? No problem. As luck would have it, a sweet editing job was availabe to do car commercials. Pay was good. But my god was it boring. Same damn commercials day after day. Then, Cox Communications called. I answered and there I was. I heard about a new sports channel starting up in New Orleans and I applied just for the hell of it. I got the job. So now I'm working in New Orleans, live in Mississippi, and do promos and various other stuff. Oh, and I work in a closet. That's my office/editing suite. A converted closet. Everything that you see on our air that I have done, comes from my closet. I don't have an office number. It just says - The Closet. Didn't realize how outdated this is. Well, let's see. After Katrina, the family moved back to Oklahoma. I returned to New Orleans and worked for 6 months there, living in a hotel, getting feed, obeying the curfews, trying to cope. Well, after 6 months, I finally quite and returned to Oklahoma. Didn't work for a month but started up with OSU-OKC. After 2 months I moved up to a managemnet position. Have been there ever since. I never realized just how good it feels to be someplace you really feel comfortable in. For me, OKC is it. No more hurricanes, New Orleans or Gulf Coast. Military I was never in the military but while in H.S. I was recruited heavily by this shyster marine recruiter. I've just got to tell this story because looking back at it now, I laugh my ass off. Get this. Beside all the b.s. they fed me about the comforts of the marines, he was trying to impress me with the car the government gave him to impress the potentials. Wanna know what it was? A Chrysler Reliant K-car! Turning them down was the smartest thing I did in H.S.
