Floyd's Story
Life
Attended Drexel University 1965-1970. Married for almost 29 years with one daughter (31) - wife died in 2000 from breast cancer. Home was Fairfax VA. Worked for a couple of other companies after college before returning to Atlantic Research Corporation, Springfield VA, where I had worked as a co-op during college. Worked for the same group through several acquisitions, mergers, and name changes (Telenex, General Signal Networks, Inrange Technologies) for 28 years. Worked as engineer, product marketing, product manager, principal engineer in telecom test equipment and computer networking equipment. Spent final 8 years traveling Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Latin America, and Canada as a systems engineer to get out of the office. Was laid off a month after 9/11 due to domestic business slow-down (stoppage!) after 9/11 even though our international business was ahead...Expand for more
of quota and going strong. Company wide overhead reduction. After a few milliseconds to think about it, realized that they were doing me a huge favor and chose to call it early retirement. Within the 2 weeks before I was laid off, I had signed a contract to sell my house to a developer and my daughter had been accepted to a graduate school program and was moving to Norfolk. When the house sale closed, I bought a 40' motorhome, emptied the house, and hit the road. After a year of visiting friends, relatives, and places I just wanted to go, I realized I needed a little more structure and purpose to my life. I started volunteering in the National Parks in April of 2004 and have been at it fulltime since then. Summers at Cape Hatteras and winters at Charleston SC. Summer 2006 I'm headed for Devils Tower, Wyoming. I'm looking at places in the southwest to spend next winter.
