Frances (Francie)'s Story

After high school I went to Cal Poly. Majored in Business Administration with an Accounting Concentration. During college I joined Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and worked at Carpernter's Rexall Drug Store. I graduated in 1977. While attending Cal Poly I qualified for International Programs, so my senior year I went to school in England...Middlesex Polytechnic, Ponders End, London, England...what an experience! While attending school in England I studied French for about 7 months. The French teacher sent me to school in France for a month in July of 1977. This was school of engineers who studied business for the month I was there. They didn't really speak English, so it was sink or swim for me! I'm not that good with French (I took 4 years of Latin in high school!), but to this day when I try to think of how to say something in Spanish it comes out in French first! I guess that's the power of learning a language by the sink or swim method! After Cal Poly I worked for an accountant in Corcoran, CA for 5 years (1977 to 1982) during which time I married Jerry Langley (1979), who grew up in Porterville. I work in Hanford for 1 year to get my auditing experience and had my son, John, in 1983. I started to work in Visalia, CA in 1983 when John was 7 months old. I obtained my CPA certificate in 1984. In 1985 I made partner in the CPA firm of Gabor, Paxton, Licking & Co, Inc. In 1986 I had my daughter, Jessica. We moved to Visalia from Corcoran in 1992. I am currently a pa...Expand for more
rtner in the firm of Scott, Mainord, & Langley, CPA's in Visalia. I belong to the Visalia Rotary Club. I volunteered as treasurer of the board for FoodLink of Tulare County for 10 years (1993 to 2003), and currently serve as volunteer treasurer for CASA of Tulare County (2003 to present). Work takes so much of my time I can hardly do anything else! I have been learning to play the violin...started taking lessons about a year ago...and have taken the community college strings class. I also paint greeting cards for my rather large family to send for birthdays and anniversaries. I still do a little bit of sewing, stitching, crocheting, crafting, etc, but there isn't much time since work is 6 days a week almost all year long! The kids are grown now and I think "how did so much time go by?" My mom died in 2001, my dad died 7 months later in 2002. I have been working hard to overcome the shyness that socially pretty much crippled me in school. In school I tried to be kind, helpful, and a good friend. I don't think I had a lot of friends because people mistook the shyness for aloofness. I don't know...just a guess! In attending our recent 35 year high school class reunion I noticed how many people have stayed in touch and how many have not! It was so good to see so many people, to recognize them, to be recognized by them, to see them interact after all these years with fun and comraderie! What a lot of memories have been dredged up for me! Well, so much for now!
