Frank's Story
I was born in Holland, and came in Canada in 1954, starting at Royal George in Grade one that November. I have spent my entire 46-year career in documenting and preserving Canadian heritage, first as an archaeologist with Parks Canada, then working for heritage organizations in Alberta and Saskatchewan. I retired from the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan in 2013. Never dreamed I would spend most of my life living in the West. Met my wife Toni at university in Regina, and our family now lives throughout the country.
In retirement I continue my interest in heritage, focusing on construction history, such as the history of brickmaking in Canada, Saskatchewan architects, and the history of the Bell Farm at Indian Head, Sask. Iâm an honourary member of the Saskatchewan ...Expand for more
Association of Architects and have co-authored a few books relating to historic construction in Saskatchewan.
I love the low humidity out here, as well as the marvellous prairie views, but sorely miss those beautiful fall days and colours of Quebec. Fall colours in southern Saskatchewan (mainly yellow and brown) only last a few weeks, then the rain and wind strips the leaves off every tree. Itâs a long time till spring, but I wouldnât live here if I didnât love the climate and environment. We have travelled to both the east and west coasts on several occasions, and I thoroughly enjoy the terrain through both sides of the international boundary. Driving is my preferred mode of transport.
Life in Canada has been very good for me, and it all started at Royal George.
