Frank's Story

After finishing at Holy Family School in 1961, I attended St. John Vianney Minor Seminary for the four years of high school and the two years of junior college. I attended St. Vincent DePaul Seminary in Boynton Beach for a little more than a semester when I finally decided that the priesthood and organized religion would not be in my future. I moved to Washington, DC for the next eight months, attending classes at Georgetown University and working as a counselor at a children's residential treatment facility. I started in the fall of 1968 at University of Florida. I earned BA, MS, and PhD degrees in psychology over the nest seven years. After a 1-year post-doctoral teaching fellowship at UF, I completed three more years at the University of Mississippi in psychopharmacology research. Longing to return to Florida, I joined the faculty of Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne in 1978. I moved up the faculty food chain to associate professor (1980) and professor (1986). I also chaired the psychology undergraduate program for 5 years and then was dean of the School of Psychology for 8 years. I helped begin the East Central Florida Memory Clinic in 1991, and continue there as director of research and training. I limit my professional efforts to neuropsychology and sport psychology. I have two major interests. The first is research on assistive technology with dementia patients and their caregivers. In sport psychology, I combined an interest in sport with my knowledge in neuropsychology to pursue research in the area of sport-related concussion and the role of soccer heading. It is nice to be able to combine hobby and profession. I really enjoy what I do, and I can truly say that I look forward to coming into work every day. I took a sabbatical in 2002 at University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Psychiatry and Neuropsychology. It was great to be a free agent and spend my time learning and experiencing many new opportunities. On the personal side, I married Ellen Kane in 1969, and we have two fantastic children, Elizabeth...Expand for more
St. Clare Lunny and Tristan Kane Webbe. Elizabeth and her husband, B.J. are parents to Bernard Joseph Lunny, III (Ben) and Frank Michael Lunny. Tristan is married to Jess Sparling and they have 1 year old named Brennan. The other member of our family is a yellow Labrador retriever named Murphy. My Dad turned 96 in 2014 and still lives by himself and drives safely. My Mom died in 2001 at the age of 91. In contrast to so many of the people we see at the Memory Clinic, her mind was still sharp as ever but her body had failed badly over the previous ten years. Ellen's academic background is in history, and she picks and chooses her work stints as a substitute teacher in the Brevard County Schools. Tristan earned an MS in Applied Behavior Analysis and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with Quality Behavioral Solutions in Southborough, MA. Elizabeth was the Advertising Director for Vogue Magazine in New York City for several years before accepting a marketing vice presidency with Three Lions Entertainment (producers of Fashion Rocks and Movies Rocks). Even though I still think of her as my little girl, she now puts together multi-million dollar deals on a regular basis, and periodically has to entertain celebrities from the music and film industries. My main interests outside of work and family are reading, running and backpacking. I am a regular at local races, and have run more than 400 over the past few years, including about 20 marathons. I find that running keeps me healthy, confident, and humble. Backpacking gets me back to nature so I can recharge. I have hiked many hundreds of miles on the Appalachian Trail and even more miles in beautiful mountainous areas through the country. It is harder to juggle all of the balls now than it was 40 years ago, but there also are more balls. I was thinking of retiring in a couple of years until the stock market self-destructed in 2009, taking much of my retirement savings with. Academics is not very remunerative so now I figure I'll have to work until age 70. Fortunately I enjoy it greatly.
