Frank's Story

Life I'm originally from New Brunswick, NJ, and lived just outside Princeton until the summer of '72 when we relocated to Woodland Hills, Calif., an uppity sub of L.A. I attended private schools from 5th grade on. In 1984,I joined the Coast Guard. School My days at Constable Elementary in Kendall Park, New Jersey, truly seem like half a billion years ago! And in another galaxy. After our move to So-Cal I must have done a memory dump on New Jersey - because I got so engrossed in the role of new-kid-on-the-block in Tinsel Town. Starting school there, Platt Ranch Elementary was no day at Zuma Beach! Then, having to start at yet a different school again, the following year, was sort of a drag. And this time it was a private school, St. Mel's (smells). There I never quite warmed up to my peers or to the mostly-Irish teaching staff. I can't blame the former, they were mostly as awkward and malcontented as I was, but something about the latter's arrogant and heavy-handed approach I never quite learned to appreciate. Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" comes to mind. Though I can count them on one hand, I will say there were some good people among both groups. Crespi High School was a helluva lot better. Between playing Water Polo and participating in some of the stage productions, life got real and I made a ton of friends. Those stories could fill a book. After graduation from Crespi, I attended a few semesters at Pierce but could not make up my ...Expand for more
mind about what to major in, so I joined the service. Presently, I'm enrolled at DeVry University, online, going for a BS in Technical Management. Military I've been in the Coast Guard since 1984 - not counting '90. I hope I’ve contributed to the saving of lives and to keeping our country safe. If experience is the best teacher, then I should have a Ph. D. I'm not financially wealthy yet, but I can check off the travel item on my “to do” list, if all but 2 timezones (between Germany and the Persian Gulf) count. I’ve been as far north as Thule, Greenland, and as far south as Sydney, Australia. I've had Turkish coffee in Kuwait (gritty, but it’ll wake your a** up), and "played" the honkey-tonk piano at the Red Dog Saloon in Juneau, Alaska (got the scars to prove it). For you salty dogs, I've been initiated across the Arctic Circle, the Equator, and the 180 - so I have my Polar Bear, Shell Back, and Golden Dragon certificates. These days I help instruct a maintenance course at a tech training facility in Petaluma, Calif. I've got five medals. The Good Conduct (of course), the Arctic Service, the Humanitarian Service, the National Defense, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary. I also have an assortment of lesser awards, including the Commandant's Letter of Commendation ribbon, the rifle and pistol marksman ribbons, the Sea Service ribbon, the Navy Arctic Service ribbon, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation and 5 Coast Guard Unit Commendations, and a few others.
