Franz's Story

Life My Spouse I met Debbie Howard in high school, a Junior, when I was a senior. She was in the Chorus. We hung around together in school and got married in August '73, after my graduation. We divorced in February 1988. Remarried in December '88, to Suzi, a woman I met in the Army, she and I went separate ways and were divorced in January 2004. No marriage plans in the future and not in the dating scene, either, I think I have to put a lot into perspective. Military Service I entered active duty with the Army in 1975, serving for 20 years in such exciting foreign countries as Japan, Korea, Germany and North Carolina. Okay, Carolina's a bit of a stretch, but it was VERY foreign to me by the time I arrived. People said I had a good voice so I put it to use professionally, serving in Army Broadcasting as a local TV news anchor, a network radio news anchor, a network TV news reporter, a local radio DJ (yes, a DJ), an emcee, a film narrator, and everything else where you might hear a unique voice, even movie trailers. People at the office who don't know me ask if I ever have thought about working in radio. "It's the face, isn't it?" I ask them. What I do best is fun. I'm very lucky to be able to make a living doing it and take myself no more seriously than absolutely necessary. My Pets I used to have a cat (one at a time) but live alone now and think it's unfair to the animal to offer such limited bonding time as I have, with work and travel. My Kids Two of my children have died in traffic accidents over the years. Lori died in May of 1988,...Expand for more
on a church bus hit by a drunk driver in Kentucky. She was 12. Tiffiny died in September 1994 after running into the path of a tractor-trailer truck. She was nine. Her younger sister, Crystal is estranged from me. My oldest, Tom, has four children and works in business development. Tom and Lori were my children with Debbie Howard. Tiffiny and Crystal were my second wife's children by her first marriage. I adopted Crystal after Tiffiny died. My Job I'm a writer, editor, and mass communication consultant for a major organization, working in strategic communication with the federal government. This brought me to Washington, DC and the home of some of the biggest media in the world. Guess who works a lot! College Beginning in Tokyo, Japan, in late 1977, I attended University of Maryland University College courses at the U.S. military installations where I was stationed. I earned a bachelor of science degree, while stationed with the Army in Wuerzburg, Germany, While in Wuerzburg, I continued on for a master's degree with Boston University's extension program, finishing during the "Gulf War" in 1991. .My "Me" I also am lucky enough to have good friends all over the world. Some are Vietnam Era veterans like I am, many had it much worse than I at the time. Some are the many new friends I have gained in Vietnam, the Philippines, Afghanistan, Japan, Korea, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, the list goes on. I've tried to focus on the happiness I can have, even if the memories of my Daddy's Girls and their tragedies never wander far from my thoughts.
