Fred's Story

Life I joined the U S Coast Guard right out of Benson High School. Seven years later I had the opportunity to go to OCS and was commissioned an Ensign in 1966. I spent a total of twenty years in the service. I was a Federal Marine Investigator and Marine Inspector with specialties in non-destructive testing. Near the end of my career I was loaned to a civilian government agency and spent two summers as a Federal Inspector on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Project. Along the way I picked up an AA and an AS. After service I used my GI Bill and graduated from Linfield College with a BS in Business Management. The next chunk of my life was spent as owner/manager of a tax preparation business in Astoria, Oregon. I had passed my Consultan...Expand for more
t exam and had up to fifteen employees. Overlapping both my military service and tax business, I taught business, income tax, and first aid classes at various community colleges. In 1992, I went back to school at the University of Oregon. In 1996 I was awarded my MS in Human Resource Management. That led to a tenured professorship at the University of Nevada, Reno [Dodd-Beales Fire Protection Training Academy] where I chaired the HAZMAT training school and also taught SAR Search Management, Vertical Rescue, and Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting. In 2002 my wife if 38 years died. In 2003 I re-married a family friend. We are now happily retired in the Oregon High Desert, at Madras, Oregon on ten acres of solitude. Life is good!
