Fred's Story
Like many LHS grads, I have done many things in the last 54 years. Among them: graduated from UC Berkeley with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in History--earned a Ph.D. in History from UCLA--had a Fulbright Fellowship for doctoral study in Paris, France in 1967-68--became a Professor of History in 1969 at Northeastern Illinois University (in Chicago) and retired from that position in 1996--wrote six books on the history of U.S. radio and television, two e-books on history education, and one political e-novel, and I recently uploaded my Ph.D. dissertation, and completed a novel set in World War I. Married in 1971 and remain happily so to this day.
As well as being a professor, I created MacDonald & Associates Ltd., the world's largest privately-owned archive of historical films. For 24 years we provided film clips to documentary makers, TV news, movie studios, ad agencies, and the like. In December 2010, the Library of Congress purchased our entire archive and moved all of my films, tapes, and paper materials to its film preservation campus in Culpeper, Virginia. Now, the J. Fred & Leslie W. MacDonald Collection will be forever preserved alongside the historic papers of Thomas Jefferson and others.
I live in retirement in the Chicago suburbs and love the city. I still like to write--it must be the OLYMPIAN STAFF still in me--and have just finished two internet adventure books that meld written words and audio-visual materials. These multimedia e-books are intended to interest young minds in the study of history. The books are available free of charge online. The titles ...Expand for more
are THE HISTORY SHOPPE, and its sequel, THE CODE OF CLIO--they're filled with interactive pictures and complete archival films.
More conventional is my latest novel,THE HEADLONG FURY: AN ODYSSEY THROUGH THE WORLD WAR OF 1914-1918. It is set in the First World War: no films, no pictures, just words--but timely, because 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the Great War This book is avalable on Kindle and Nook for less than $4. As advertisement for the book, I created on-line the WORLD WAR ONE CENTENNIAL GALLERY which contains 700+ magazine articles published during that war. The articles are free to read and download.
I have also on-lined my doctoral dissertation in French history entitled, THE MAN WHO SAVED FRANCE: CAMILLE BARRERE, MASTER DIPLOMAT, 1898-1902. Everyone is invited to read/download them. Classmates will not allow email addresses, so you can find them and my other books free of charge and filled with films, radio shows, still pictures, and the like at jfredmacdonald dot com.
Plus, you'll also find another venture, the AMERICAN INDIAN FILM GALLERY, where I have posted 450 free films about Native Americans from the Arctic to the tip of South America. However, the University of Arizona has been given ownership of this site and now operated the site.
And I, LIBERAL: A POLITICAL WARNING is another venture. It's a political e-novel available on the website or on Kindle/Nook. Visit jfredmacdonald.com where almost everything if free of charge to read and download. Enjoy.
And by the way, leaving Chicago and returning to sunny Los Angeles. Moving this summer!
