Fred's Story
Life
I currently teach/practice Anesthesia at Stanford University Medical School and have been enjoying a long career at Stanford since 1979. My major area of interest is Critical Care Medicine, and the care of complex medical patients requiring high risk anesthetics and surgery. I have a particular interest in a rare life-threatening endocrine tumor (pheochromocytoma) that is associated with serious anesthetic complications. After graduating from CHS, I attended Houghton College for 1 yr and then (oops!, started over) Evangel University, graduating with a degree in Biology. After medical school at Saint Louis University, postgraduate training followed in internal medicine for 2 yrs at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Irvine campus. Then I changed tracks into anesthesiology at Stanford University and finished my training with a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Stanford and Harvard Universities. (While at Harvard, I got housed in a graduate student dorm directly across the street from 23 Garden Street!! I couldn't believe that I was back in Cambridge at that very spot.) I am currently co-director of the intensive care units, and have published over 50 articles or book chapters, which is not a lot for these parts, but enough (along with other skills) to get me promoted

duties (human patient care, teaching, research, administration), I have enjoyed volunteering at the San Francisco and San Diego Zoos and the Gorilla Foundation (Woodside, CA). I have assisted in the anesthetic management of many rare and exotic animal species (gorillas, giraffes, lions, tigers, elephants, etc) over the last 25 years.
I have also traveled far from my ivory tower to participate in short-term (2-4 week)medical missions to under-developed countries of the world. On these adventures I have provided anesthesia for life-changing plastic/reconstructive surgery for the poor. Some excursions have been entirely educational. I have been on almost 30 trips to various Central/South American countries, Africa, and Southeast Asia. My most recent trips were to Bolivia and Bangladesh and Nepal. These experiences are a poignant connection
with the rest of the real world, and leave me constantly thankful for all the things that I could so easily take for granted, and for the opportunity to do something significant for some of the poor of this world.
I married a wonderful woman in 1971 and we have 3 children, Heidi, Matt, and Megan. I still enjoy a lot of outdoor stuff; golf, tennis, BB, softball, running, snow skiing, camping in the Sierras, photography and enjoy riding my motorcycle to work in order to beat the traffic. God is good.
