AWARDS GIVEN TO FRED PFOST
FOR ACHIEVMENTS
These first seven awards were given in recognition for projects
that he did while at The Ampex Corporation in Redwood City, CA.
1. 1957; EMMY for the development in 1956 of the World's first commercially successful Video Tape Recorder.
2. 1976; Certificate of Appreciation from The National Association of Broadcasters for the VTR development.
3. 1981: Alex M. Poniatoff Award of Excellence.
4. 1981: Video Hall of Fame.
5. 1981: National Inventors Hall of Fame.
6. 1986: SMPTE award for the VTR development.
7. 1986: Letter of commendation from President Ronald Reagan for the development of the Video Tape Recorder.
Most of the following awards were given for his activities as a consultant in the 40 years after he left Ampex in 1962.
8. 1966: EMMY for the Instant Replay/Stop action disc recorder developed for The MVR Corporation in Mtn. View, CA.
9. 1988: Beckman Golden Tool Award for the development of the Biomek 1000 automatic pipetter.

11. 1998: Fellow award of the SMPTE for lifetime achievments.
12. 1952 - 2003: Fifty issued U S patents and hundreds of foreign patents.
He received no award for his development of the hard disc data recorder system he developed in 1963 for The Data Disc Corp. of Mtn. View, CA which later sold a license to the I B M Corp. for its use in computers. That system is used today in almost every computer in the world.
13. 1994: Boise High School Hall of Fame.
14. 2005: EMMY for "Lifetime Achievement"
Workplace
After graduating from U.C. Berkeley in 1951 I started working as an engineer at Ampex Corp. in Redwood City, CA. I left Ampex in 1962 and did consulting in engineering for the next 40 years during which I helped some 25 companies.
