Fred's Story
After graduation, I followed the path most of us took and enrolled in college. After two semesters at Miami-Dade Community College I realized that I was tried of school and enlisted in the Air Force, partially because I had a low draft number. I also hoped to see the world and experience a different side of life. I didn't get to see exotic countries but I did learn that this Florida guy does not do well in extremely cold climates. My second assignment took me to Limestone Maine where the winters are very cold and let me assure you that being out in sub-zero temperatures is not fun. However, I only had to endure that for a year and my last assignment while on active duty was in Washington D.C. as a member of the USAF Presidential Honor Guard.
While I was stationed in D.C., I had the distinct honor of participating in numerous activities at the White House, the Capital to include the inauguration of President Carter and Arlington National Cemetery. It is also where I met my wife and we begin our journey together.
After my release from active duty, I was able to pursue my life long dream which was to become a police officer. cement, it just wasn't fulfilling my career goals. I eventually accepted a position with the Orange County Sheriff's Office and I can say without any reservations, I have never regretted the move.
During the past 3 decades, I have had several assignments in Patrol, Criminal Investigations, and Community Affairs. I am currently a field training supervisor and I have the pleasure of shaping the careers of recruits fresh out of the academy. Also during this time I have enjoyed several personal moments like the birth of my daughters and finishing college with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration.
As I ponder life in retirement, I continually think back on all the opportunities I have had and people I have met over the years. Although I have some great memories, I still miss the friends I grow up with and went to school with. Some of the folks I miss the most are my best friends Jack Parsons and Bernie Gontko and the two young ladies we grew up with Debbie Johnson and Patti Lell. As time goes by it¿s fun think back on our high school days and where we were going to spend Saturday night - Marcella¿s, Carol City Drive In or both? But as we move forward remember this old Chinese Proverb- ¿A true friend is like sound health, the value of it is seldom known until lost.¿
