Fred's Story

Life Before retiring I worked as a special education teacher for 37 years. I have now been retired for almost 7 years. I have gone to the following colleges: Grand Valley State University, Lake Michigan College, Western Michigan University, and Michigan State University. Dad passed away several months before I graduated from Western in '72. I was finally "orphaned" when Mom died in 1990. Both had cancer. As a result, I became involved in the Berrien County Relay for Life, a major fund raiser for the American Cancer Society. In 1973, I married my first wife, Nancy Hocker, who was a local girl and attended the Catholic schools. We were divorced in January of '89 from which I received full custody of my two children, Lisa (now 38) and Andy (now 36). Lisa has lived in Benton Harbor and tutored students in math and science at Lake Michigan College. She has suffered from schizoaffective disorder for the last 19 years. Most of the time she fought to overcome her illness. Recently her symptoms have worsen. As a result, she has been in the hospital most of a year. Currently, she is in long term care. Andy lives in Kalamazoo, MI where he lives with his girlfriend. He is divorced with two children, Chase Michael, who is now 10, and Parker Sellies, who is 7. He has returned to college to get his degree. My second marriage, in 1991, was to Lori Beck Pozowilko, a St. Joe grad (1973). She has an RN degree and was a manager for Lakeland Homecare nurses, and she is now retired. We became grandparents for the first time with Jayden, who is now 11. She has a brother, Jordan, who is 7. In the future, I would like to take more time to travel and check of items on my bucket list, In addition, I enjoy going to concerts. Twin brother, Ted, lives in Sacramento, California. We have kept in touch, however, we have become extremely opposites in our belief systems and politics. Religious Beliefs In my early 20s, I became a Unitarian. I've always questioned my Christian upbringing from early childhood. I felt comfortable in making the change after the death of my father. I claim myself as a monotheist, and have broken away from organized religion. Eventually, I may go back to church, but for now I feel fulfilled in making spirituality a part of my everyday life vs. finding it in a church. On Sunday morning, I instead relax with coffee and the Sunday paper. School Most of what I got involved in was motivated by being a social person. However, I didn't get wild and crazy until I got into college. I was part of student council and Concert Choir in high school. I was self conscious as a teenager and an anxiety wreck. Most of my classmates were unaware of this. College I originally was going to start at LMC, but during their strike in '67, I, instead,...Expand for more
started my freshman year at GVSU. I hated dorm life. No one seemed serious about being in college. However, some of my most fun years were in college, especially with my frat brothers of APO. I did go to LMC for one year and then transferred to WMU (Party school!) where I got my teaching degree in Special Education. I partied so much, I'm surprised I graduated. Some of my favorite classes were through MSU where I received my masters degree in Curriculum and Teaching. I was in a dorm at Grand Valley State University. I hated it! Most of the students had no desire to graduate. They were there to party. Didn't they realize you could do both? I belonged to Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity. I made a lot friends and created many memorable experiences. In general, campus life was one of the most fun parts of my life. Campus life was one of the most fun and reckless times of my life. It would be too dangerous to relive those days. It is a miracle I made it out alive or graduated. Workplace My first six years of teaching were at Gard School, working with cognitively impaired teen/adults. Our contract was with the St. Joseph Public Schools even though we were employed by Berrien RESA. I finished off my career at the Blossomland Learning Center in Berrien Springs. Even though I am glad to have made the decision to teach the handicapped, I know I am going to be happy in retirement. I left with many good memories. I am subbing to two times a week to build a traveling fund. I have worked with a great bunch of students and fellow staff members. Up to this point, retirement has been very fulfilling. I was born and raised in Benton Harbor. I moved to St. Joseph in order to find a top notch school system for my children. I am now proud of the way Benton Harbor is reinventing itself. It is becoming a fun place again. My obsessions are working out (and socializing) at the South Shore Fitness Club and spending time on computer activities (Internet, Facebook editing photos, and downloading music). What make me most happy is spending time with family and friends. My biggest surprise in life is how convoluted it can be. I discovered the world of mental illness when living with a couple of immediate family members who had acquired schizophrenia. As a result, I found out that there seemed to be a genetic trait for mental disorders on my ex-wife's side of the family. This motivated me to become involved in NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to family and friends anonymously; I then would spend the rest on cancer research, mental health research,or the Special Olympic (Area 17). My current age is 68. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be be ready for the nursing home.

Our Moma cat just died. She was one of the smartest cats I've ever known. She lived all of 22 years and 7 months. She will be sorely missed. What a great companion she was. ( Moma is between her 2 babies in the photo.)
