Frederic's Story

Life I have been at UM-Flint since 1980. Before then I taught at Michigan State University in the departments of American Thought and Language, and English, from which I earned my degrees. My areas of academic interest include all periods of American Literature (though with an emphasis on Modernism), American Culture & Popular Culture, textual editing, and fiction writing. I teach courses in all these areas from time to time. I've written or edited several books and numerous articles, and have served as Chair of English and as Director of the Master of Liberal Studies Program in American Culture. During the 2005-06 academic year I served as Senior Advisor to Chancellor Mestas, and I currently am again chairing English and serving as chair of faculty council. Among other activities, I recently served as treasurer of the Ernest Hemingway Foundation, an educational non-profit that shares rights to a number of that author’s works. My immediate family includes my wife, Jerri Gillett, sons Joseph and Daniel, and Roxy the golden retriever. Our previous retriever Zoe died in August 2008 after being diagnosed with cancer in January. Jerri manages a lab in Michigan State University’s Department of Plant Pathology, “killing plants for science” as we usually describe it. The lab actually specializes in the control of diseases of Michigan small fruits via natural means (minimizing the use of pesticides), and during the busy summer season she will be coordinating multiple research teams that crisscross Michigan in several pickup trucks, communicating by cell phone and also monitoring field conditions via remotely operated computerized weather stations. It’s about as different from literary study as you can get, which saves arguments about which of us is more successful. We have been married since 1979 and traditionally quarrel only on our anniversary, December 15, which we usually manage to forget in the press of holiday preparations. Lately we seem to be forgetting to quarrel even then. My past students may remember me as having characterized Jerri as “50 going on 30.” Since from time to time she has to go into the lab at midnight to shake all the test tubes three times, we live in Meridian Township, about a mile and a half from MSU. (Carpooling helps keep me sane.) Joseph graduated from MSU majoring in Geographic Information Science, essentially highly sophisticated computerized mapping. He now works at AEW, a civil engineering/architecture firm in the north suburbs of Detroit. I generally have described Joseph as “a little [now big] Fred clone,” which doesn’t make him happy but is pretty accurate. Like me he is a non-morning person but has learned t...Expand for more
o grit his teeth for the first half hour and not let everybody know that he would just as soon strangle them all. Once fully awake he generally is genial, as am I, hates busywork but is willing to work to accomplish something worthwhile. Dan graduated from MSU after five years as a member of the Spartan Marching Band. He uses his major in computer engineering designing chips for mainframe computers for IBM, in Poughkeepsie, New York. At thirteen he built his own computer, complete with clear Plexiglas case and extra-cool flashing LED lights, and he followed in Joseph’s footsteps as French horn player and student of German. (Jerri and I suspect that the boys chose German so that they could communicate without us understanding but, fortunately or unfortunately, German includes a number of English cognate words, so we usually know what’s up.) Like Jerri, Daniel is cheerful and easy to get along with. As a teen Daniel also built his own electric and acoustic guitars from scratch (chunks of wood, parts ordered from the internet and sets of plans) and a Caribbean-style steel drum. I School I attended Tucson High School for my freshman through junior years, then moved to Shawnee Mission East when my father took a new job. At THS I was active in choir and the student newspaper, and spent a lot of time with my two good friends Mark Leavitt and John Mann. I remember strange theological debates in which Mark and I (a Jew and a Presbyterian) would gang up on John (a Roman Catholic). We also came up with a line of reasoning one day that debunked Einstein's theory of relativity and allowed us to travel faster than the speed of light. You probably had to be there to believe it. Since I couldn't step in as Managing Editor of the paper at my new high school I instead became a novice debater as a senior along with my buddy Corby Calvin. We got all of the jewels on our National Forensic Society pins in one year and generally didn't lose debates unless we made our (female) opponents cry, which would undercut all of our careful arguments so far as the judges were concerned. I continued in choir at SM East and actually made the All State Choir. Go figure. My favorite SM East teacher was the wonderful English teacher Everett Rees, who annually would return from Europe with a new Triumph sports car and a killer slide show. One of the last slides was a gorgeous brunette leaning against the rail of the Queen Elizabeth II. "And this is my Summer Friend," Rees deadpanned. Click! On to the next slide! Rees was a life master at bridge and offered the very good advice (which I took) "Don't learn to play bridge until you get your Ph.D." In fact I still am avoiding bridge.
