MA 1964 & Ph.D. 1967 (Philosophy) from University of Michigan. 1965-1967 on leave from Michigan to USAID of the State Dept. in India where I helped establish the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur and helped start the first educational TV station in India. I became a prominent Philosopher and Historian of Science, have written three books, edited 2 others, over 100 journal articles and book chapters, and one film. I have been a leading expert on the nature of scientific theories and models. My main academic appointments have been at University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland Baltimore, and, after retiring from Maryland, Texas Tech University where I first was Professor & Chair of Philosophy and from 2002-2010 Professor & Chair of the college-sized Classical & Modern Languages and Literatures department and towards the end also Director of the Intensive English Program. I also ran two language centers in Europe (Germany & Spain) and summer programs in Spain, Mexico, Germany, France, Brazil, and Russia. I frequently traveled abroad in conjunction with those programs. In 2010, I stepped down as Department Chair, assumed the role of Professor of Classics/Catedratico de Clasicas and moved to Sevilla Spain where Texas Tech has a campus and I teach a Roman Spain and other Classics courses in person and on-line. I very much like living in Spain. I also have held short-term appointments at UCSB, Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, Indiana University, Columbia, and Princeton. I have taught or held research appointments in Philosophy, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Nursing, Geological & Planetary Sciences, and Language & Literature departments. . My more recent research focused on aggressive use of technology to make more effective learning of foreign languages. I have been part of important national and state course redesign projects. I also have done research on using study abroad to enhance language acquisition. My present research focuses on Roman Spain, Roman hydraulic gold mining al Las Medulas, and various aspects of Greek science, technology, and culture. At various times I have enjoyed as hobbies back packing, technical rock and frozen waterfall climbing, flying including aerobatics (I have a commercial license), restoring houses, farming, creative writing, and traveling. I am an opera buff and have seen operas in the US, Europe, and Asia--many with my brother John (SGHS S1960) who now lives in Taipei,Taiwan. Adventures in my life have included crashing an airplane at 19, multiple near-death experiences, sneaking into the Sudan from Ethiopia in a hollowed out log but having to take refuge in an Anuak village and dope the chief to gain safety, and climbing the most extreme difficulty 400' frozen waterfall in the East on my 50th birthday. Today I do tamer things like going to bullfights and going to archaeological sites in Greece, Italy, Turkey, France, Spain, and Portugal to photograph ruins and museum holdings. Since moving to Spain I have shot more than 30,000 such photos. In 1963 I finally figured out my sexual orientation. I came out as professionally gay in 1969. I was in my third gay relationship, this time a long-distance one that lasted over 14 years. My boyfriend, rob, died April, 2012. Some of you met him at our 50th Reunion. I now have a Spanish boyfriend. Some years ago I legally changed my name to Julian Frederick Suppe. I answer to both Julian and Fred. Classmates.com lacks the technical ability to show locations outside of the USA and Canada, so the support people suggested that I include my location information here. I Live in Sevilla Spain, in Cuidad Central (the old Central City) in a remodeled house that goes back at least to the 17th C: Calle Bailen, 31, Sevilla 41001, Spain. If you Google map me, my house is the narrow (11' wide) pinkish 4-story house. If you plan to visit Seville, Spain, contact me in advance and maybe we can get together.
