G. Christopher's Story
Life after PV has been a bit of a roller coaster - in a good way. I went to Occidental College in LA and Columbia University in Paris. Did the 5 year plan as I took a year off to travel in Southern Europe and Northern Africa. Then worked for 2 years in LA and the Bay area before going back to grad school in Italy and Washington, DC. Got an MA in Intl Econ and started doing strategic studies for a regional bank in DC. Was transferred to Paris to start up a private banking operation in 1990. (A 2-3 year assignment but more than 30+ years later and I'm still here.)
After 5 years I was recruited by the Bank of NY in London to run their CRM in Western Europe. Another 5 years and then came back down to Paris to run financial comm for Alcatel-Lucent and then an oil service co. Interesting work that had me traveling around the US and the world almost constantly (airports get old really quickly, believe me!). Then headed up the IR dept at a CAC 40 co. for 7 years. Left to do ficom at the e-commerce sub of another French conglomerate. Now I run my own consultancy and IM business. Allows me to re-introduce myself to the family (wife and 2 children, 21 & 29). That was fun and being your own boss was interesting. About 2 years into that I was contacted by a CAC 40 corporate to run their global financial comm. Currently working on a debt restructuring program for a major French groce...Expand for more
ry chain. I also work on a contract basis for various other clients. Life is a great adventure. PV was a great place to start!
Life overseas is very interesting and you definitely get a different perspective on certain things. Living in Paris (actually out in the 'burbs) is definitely a "plus", it is a truly remarkable place. Sometimes a bit trying on the nerves just like any big city but without the violent crime. We travel whenever we can. Other than the US we like the south of France (of course), the UK, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica, diving the Red Sea in Egypt, Tahiti, the Maldives, Laos and Thailand. If we ever hit the lottery we're definitely buying an island. Nice to dream...
In terms of "fitness" in the broadest sense of the term, I do a lot of diving and distance running (10 - 42.2 k). My wife asks me what my goal is before each race. I always answer to finish ahead of the folks who are walking the course. So far so good... Did the Paris Marathon (along with 32,000 other crazy people). That was actually a lot of fun. One race that I would really recommend is the Paris-Versailles at the end of every September: start out at the foot of the Eiffel Tower and end up at the Chateau of Versailles. It's an easy 16k run and good fun. If you want to have a go, just give me a heads up. Current bucket list: the GR20 in Corsica (2023), NYC Marathon, Australia, New Zealand, and...
