G. Paul's Story

Short Biography: My father, Charles Paul Corbin, was serving as a Missouri State Trooper stationed at Carthage, MO when he was killed in the line of duty on September 15, 1943, when I was 15 months old. When I was two years old, my mother Ruby, sister Betty and I moved to Cape Girardeau, MO to live with my grandmother Sarah Niswonger. I grew up in Cape attending May Green and Washington grade schools, Cape Central Jr. High, and Cape Central High School. I played football in High School and was Co-Captain of the team my Senior year. Three Days after graduation from high school (my 18th birthday), I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for 4 years. After boot camp in San Diego, my initial assignment was with the Marine Air Detachment at the Naval Air Station in Memphis, TN only 179 miles from home. While stationed there, I played football for the Navy Hellcats football team traveling throughout the US playing other military teams and small colleges. I spent the last two years of my enlistment, stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, CA. I also played football there for a Marine Team. While home on leave, I met and later married Pat Sadler from Cape. We had two wonderful sons, Rockne Paul ('63) and Clay Everett ('68). After 17 years of marriage, Pat and I divorced in '79. I married my present wife, Nancy Welch, in '80. After the Corps, I returned to Cape and went to SEMO University and played football. In 1966, I joined the Missouri State Highway Patrol with service in Troop C (St. Louis County), Troop G (Willow Springs), and GHQ (Jefferson City). I was on the Patrol's Combat Pistol team. I also became an avid runner and completed the St. Louis Marathon at the age of 48. While serving as an Instructor at the Patrol's Law Enforcement Academy, my primary duties included; Physical Fitness, Self Defence, Emergency Medical Care, Water Safety/Basic Recuse, and Police Tactics. My MSHP career included being assigned/appointed as a Troop Operations Officer, Director of th...Expand for more
e Training Division, Director of the Traffic Division, and Deputy Director of the Field Operations Bureau. I retired in 1994 with the rank of Captain. While a member of the Patrol, I was allowed to continue my formal education at; Meramec Community College, Central MO State University, the University of MO at St. Louis, the University of Louisville, Lincoln University, Northwestern University, and the United States Army's Command and Staff College. I hold AAS, BS, and MA degrees in Sociology and Criminal Justice. Upon retiring from MO Hwy Patrol, I became Chief of the Nevada Highway Patrol in 1994 and subsequently the Director of the Nevada Governor's Federal Highway Safety Program in 1996, working out of Carson City, NV. In 1998, I returned to MO to become Chief of the St. Charles, MO Police Department. Retiring from the Police Department in 2003, I became Chairman of the Criminal Justice Division of Sanford-Brown College - St. Charles Campus. I moved to Lindenwood University in the fall semester of 2004 to teach and serve as the Criminal Justice Program Manager. I retired from Lindenwood University in 2016, as an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Chair of the Military Science (Army-Air Force ROTC) Programs. After serving four years in the United States Marine Corps, I joined the MO Army National Guard in 1973 as an enlisted member of the 175th MP BN. I became a Warrant Officer in the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in 1975 and received a direct commission to Captain, Military Police, in 1977. I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, General's Staff Officer, in 1994. My unit assignments included; STARC (Jefferson City), 204 MP BN (Jefferson Barracks), 4175th CID (Fulton), 35th RAOC (Jefferson City), and CAC (Kansas City). Additionally, I competed on the MO National Guard Pistol/Rifle Team for almost 15 years winning the Governor's 20 Award, National Guard Bureau Chief's 50 Medal, and the US Army's Gold Distinguished Pistol Shooter's (Excellence in Competition) Medal.
