Gary's Story
Moments upon moments upon moments. By the time of my thirtieth birthday I had had sexual encounters with over one-thousand different partners. After that I stopped counting. I guess I am not what one would call the marrying kind. I have owned houses, apartment buildings, sport cars, bicycles, designer clothes, custom furniture. I have also experienced the sensation that comes from losing everything. When you have nothing, you don't need anything. I have lived in houses, lofts, rooms, apartments, more rooms, living room floors. There have been nights, lost in the mountains, counting the stars, wondering if I will ever see civilization again. I have partied on penthouse terraces in New York City, drank vodka in underground cafes in Moscow, Russia. I have been privileged to explore the diamond collection on site in the Kremlin. I have seen Faberge eggs, both in the Kremlin as well as the Forbes Collection. I have visited the Louvre. I was at the Diana Ross concert in Central Park the night she was rained out. I have walked naked along Fifth Avenue. I was in New York City on 9/11. I have spent years dividing my time between New York and Sao Paulo, Brasil , 3 months at a time. I have celebrated the Fourth of July accompanied by the American ambassador to Brasil . I have made fun, made trouble, made do. I have made neon signs that light up Times Square, avenues in Moscow, hometown streets as well as strip malls across America. I have experienced the loss of family and friends. I have known deep loneliness as well as profound connection. I have seen the moonlight over the ocean while living on an island miles off the coast of Rio De Janeiro. I have started from scratch more than once in my life. It is easier to tell the story then to live it. The education I received ...Expand for more
at a rural high school in Lansing , Kansas laid a foundation that has supported me through a lifetime. I extend thanks to several special teachers who were influences upon me: 1) Mrs.Sandeman, who taught me that there really is a larger world where I can make myself be understood as well as understand, 2) Irene Johnsmeyer, Mostly I remember her elegance. To this day I am often surprised how frequently I use geometry as well as the occasional algebraic formula. 3) A special Thank you to Peggy Roeyer who introduced me to the connection between literature and life. In the future, when you speak of this, and you will,be kind.
My bicycle is locked to the porch rail of the bungalow. The evening sky begins to show hues of gold and red. The sun is still brutal even at this time of day. Sunglasses fashioned in Britain shield the eyes. The lenses emphasize the red tones. The hallway inside is dark. A deft move produces a key that retains the battered image of an eagle against a field of stars. The shuttered glass double doors open to reveal a 9' x 9' room. Taupe drapes made from a heavy cotton/poly blend keep the room dark. A ceiling fan sluggishly moves the day's heat. Across the floor are scattered pages from this week's local newspaper. Various mail , opened as well as unopened, covers the desk. A journal, fruit, and candles rest on the table in the center of the room. A makeshift closet is in the corner. A futon mattress is on the floor under the window. .The evening promises to be cool. This is Home for now. Moments upon moments upon moments.
My favorite cliches include:
- I rely upon the kindness of strangers (Blanche Dubois)
- I've never met a man I didn't like. (Will Rogers)
- Regrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention. (Sammy Davis,Jr.)
