Gary's Story
Life
Well, I did the reverse migration and ended up in California. I moved from Oregon in 1982 to Montana, froze my rear end off and moved down to California a few years later to thaw out my bones.
I live in Rocklin....and trust me, there is a reason the town name has "rock" in it. Rocklin is a suburb north of Sacramento, a bedroom community that everyone lives in and drives into Sacramento for work. I have been in accounting since I went to Montana, working for CPA firms for eight years and then into corporate accounting, enjoying the pressures as a controller for several different companies. Now I work as a consultant, solving other peoples accounting mess, fix it and move on. I think I may go back to a perm position, this way when I have it cleaned up, I can keep it that way.
UPDATE: have been on a consulting assignment since May 2009 down in Ontario, CA, it was suppose to last ten days to two weeks............go figure, May 7th will be two years. Me and Southwest Airlines are good friends. If in the Ontario/Rancho Cucamonga area, look me up.
We have lived in Rocklin for 18 years and enjoyed raising our children and watching them grow, mature, graduate from high school and watch the town grow, and grow it has.
I have been married to the same beautiful woman for 30 years and even though life has it ups and downs, I am a very lucky person to have shared my life with my wife Sheryl. I met Sheryl at Mt. Bachelor when I worked at the ski shop at the mountain, that was 34 years ago...she is my best friend, besides my wife.
UPDATE:
Well we are into becoming Rancher/Farmers.....can you believe that??
We closed on a bare land sale. We want to have all the classic things a "Green Acres" place would have. Tractor, chickens, cows (Texas Longhorns), horses, barn, etc.
We want to plant some vines and grow some Zin, what a lot of work...........I must be nuts!!! Not a big spread, but 55.4 acres will be enough for me for awhile. So now I search Craigslist for tractors and implements.........boy am I having fun now!
We have three children. My oldest son Brandon graduated from UC Berkeley, Cornell Medical College in NYC. He wants to become an Orthopedic Surgeon and is doing his residency at Harvard. Enjoys living in Boston, much better than NYC, but misses California and cannot wait to come home twice a year.
My second son Bryce, completed his studies at UC Berkeley in December 2007, graduated May 2008, accepted his first job out of college in San Francisco in the Financial District, working as a Financial Analyst for a large company, but you know how that goes these days, his job was eliminated. Best thing for him, now he is a Sales Rep for Medtronic in the Spine Division in SF, to be 25, single and in SF. He moved from Berkeley into San Francisco and has an apartment on Lombard Street in the marina district. He gives me a hard time about my commute versus his...Expand for more
commute. Ah to be 25 and have no worries!!
I know, you are wondering, his kids at Berkeley...must have been the mom's gene's!!
My third child is a girl, Taren was born learning impared, but some days I wonder who is impared, her or me. Taren grounds us all, making us appreciate the little things and not worry about the real big things. When it comes to technology, she has Sheryl and I both beat. Ipods, computers, digital cameras, cell phones....she makes me look silly. I have to ask her how to use my digital camera. So some days I wonder who is impared.
Having children has been a riot. I have coached every sport you can think of, football, baseball, basketball & soccer. Coaching from the youth level through high school ranks. Coaching has been very rewarding and enjoyable. I even did a stint umpiring. Starting out in the major & senior division with Little League to umpiring high school games...the high school level, things move a lot faster and is more enjoyable to umpire.
Then I evoled from coaching to the microphone. I became the public address announcer for youth football and Little League baseball. Then I switched over to football and basketball at Rocklin High School.
This new found talent worked into play by play announcing for internet sports broadcasting. That was something I really enjoyed for several years, and I was actually good at it. I enjoyed calling games at area high schools and then continued on through the regional playoffs, NorCal and state playoffs for football and basketball. This was a shock to a lot of my friends, considering I was an accounting major and not a communication major in college...I think about getting back into it....ya, maybe next season....UPDATE: Well, I have now become a play by play broadcaster on the local TV station for high school sports. I absolutely enjoy doing play by play, it is the best seat in the house at a game. But I have to say, when they replay the games over and over, two to four times a day, even I get tired of seeing and hearing myself on TV. But it is fun and the high school appreciates my support of their programs and for me, it is just fun to do.
Speaking of seasons, football is right around the corner and we have season tickets to CAL for the seventh year now, love the college game. We will be coming up for the Cal vs Oregon game at Autzen Stadium this fall, if you are going to the game, send me an email and let's tip a cold one.
Okay, that is it, I finally did this Bio....now the rest of you can read this, and if you haven't, post one yourself. I hope this finds you happy, healthy and always trying to learn new things.
One more thing........reach out and call someone and make their day. Could be your parents, siblings or children, or just a good friend who you have not made contact with in a long period of time. It will make your day and theirs.....reminisce and laugh!!!
