Gary's Story
A synopsis of my post-SAHS life.
(If you knew me before I moved to Florida, from Illinois, umm, well, I moved to St. Augustine in 1977 - oldest continuously occupied city in the U.S.)
Entered University of Florida in Sept. 1983 with a declared major in Computer and Informational Sciences, but actually majored in partying. Withdrew from the school midway through my third semester to avoid a slew of F's since I'd long since stopped attending classes¿.
Lived with my parents, first in St. Louis where they'd moved in '83, then in Philadelphia where they got jobs in '85 after they got pink-slipped following a failed tax referendum. Worked various part- and full-time jobs before going back to school in '86. Took a full course load of night classes at the Community College of Philadelphia and earned an A.A. degree in '88.
Having rehabilitated my transcript, I enrolled in Antioch College (Yellow Springs, OH) in the Fall of '88. I was there for three years including a one year stint at a school in Tokyo - Sophia University (Jouchi Daigaku). I graduated in '91 with a B.A. in Management and International Studies.
Following a 2-month internship back in Japan that Summer, I entered (get ready, this is really long) The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (whew¿). During my brief visit home before I left for SAIS, a friend/student (Gwynne) of my parents visited for dinner, as she had...Expand for more
the previous Summer when we first met. This time, however, we were both unattached and I received a card from her while I was in school and we started a long-distance relationship (she was working in NJ, SAIS is in DC).
I graduated from SAIS with an M.A. in International Relations in 1993 and Gwynne and I were married in July. We lived in NJ for about a year then moved back to the DC area primarily to improve my prospects of finding a job in my area of expertise. I found a job as a researcher and writer with a small consulting company with a largely Japanese clientele. However, as with other places I'd worked, I was also the "computer guy" since I seemed to know more about them than anyone else at the company. I eventually switched my vocation and avocation by getting hired by the U.S. Institute of Peace doing database programming and general I.T. support. I've worked in I.T. (dealing almost exclusively with Apple products) ever since.
My first daughter was born in 1996, the second in 1999, and the third in 2002. All are, of course, brilliant, beautiful, funny, delightful, and generally amazing! ;-) None of which I can really take credit for. Gwynne and I were separated in 2007 and are slowly working toward divorce as we try to keep disruptions to our daughters' lives to a minimum.
I look forward to hearing from anyone here and encourage you to look me up on FaceBook where I'm actually much more active.
