Gary's Story
After I graduated from UCHS, I went to the College
of Santa Fe in New Mexico, and had a wonderful four
years there. It was very much an extension of my time at Union Catholic. I was the Entertainment Committee chairman, so I was in charge of scheduling entertainment and concerts.......none of which came close to the concerts we had in high School....The Who, Cream, etc. I played on the NAIC (smaller college grouping similar to division 3 in the NCAA) college soccer and tennis teams, and I graduated with a Business Administration Bachelor's degree with a minor concentration in math and statistics.
My parents had to relocate during by freshman year
in college, and that is where I lost track of all of you. My dad was transferred to Washington DC, and they moved to Northern Virginia. After I recovered from the culture shock, it turned out to be a great place to live.
After graduation from college, I received an offer from the US Census Bureau to start as an Economic Statistician at a grand salary of $5100. I accepted that position and stayed ...Expand for more
at the Census Bureau until I retired after 34years, in 2006. I now work part time for Fairfax County Va, as an Athletic fields monitor.
It's the kind of cushy job I always dreamed of...driving around the county, making sure the proper athletic groups are using the fields, resolving disputes, and answering the needs of the youth and user groups. The only downside is that the salary is closer to my beginning salary at Census, rather than my ending salary.
I married my wife Mary in 1975. We have two great kids, Maryellen and Andrew, and one grand daughter Alexandra. Maryellen graduated from Va Tech and works at Census, and Andrew played baseball and graduated from George Mason Univ, and works in athletics for Fairfax County. Guess who helped get my foot in the door for my part time job?
I think often of my high school days, friends, sports and activities and really regret losing touch with all of you. Bruce Barcklow, how are your hips? Steve Langer, still like the stones? Lou Puopolo, what happened to the rest of the ST James gang? etc etc
