Gary's Story
Life
Just a quickie for now, but here goes.
1977: After HHS graduation in '77, I attended SFASU in Nacogdoches, earning a Business degree in 1982. Yeah, I did the 5 year plan. At SFA I met my wife, Paula, married in 1983, produced son Sean Michael in 1987, daughter Jenna Lynn in 1989.
WORK: We still live in Nac where I've been doing land research / acquisition for the oil & gas industry the last several years. I've been either self employed or independent cotnractor for most of my adult life, with experience in Construction and Catastrophe Insurance Adjusting, while also playing with Real Estate.
KIDS: Sean (20) is now at SFA studying who-knows-what, Jenna (17) is about to enter her senior year at NHS as a cheerleader and spelling bee champ. BTW, Shari Horton always kicked my *$$ at that. No grand-kids yet (you bet I knocked on wood as wrote that).
HOBBIES: I've enjoyed lot's of outdoor activities, like backpacking in the mountains (lots of them) , camping, canoeing, biking, various hunting, etc. Cars have always been a passion, my current project is a 1970 Camaro SS with a modern LS1 engine/drivetrain going in with...Expand for more
other modern upgrades. I've always enjoyed working with my hands and building things, from furniture pieces to houses. I built my dad's log home in Hudson, my Mediterranean-style home in Nac among others.
FUN: We enjoy live music, community events & festivals, vacationing in the Hill Country, volunteering with school, scouts, church, hanging out with our friends.
College
My first class at SFA was English, with 14 students. HHS classmate, Melba Willmon, was there with me as well as my life-long best friend A.G. I had too much fun the first year & had to re-prioritize in order to stay in college. I did work all thru college at several jobs, including a year as a bartender at Cotton-Eyed-Joes. Ya'll remember that place, don't you? I joined a social fraternity (TKE) that produced many of my life-long friends & where I still act as advisor to the current crop of students. After graduating in 1982 with a Business degree, I went back in 1988 to graduate school, finishing my MBA in 1992. I missed the 2002 date to get a PhD (hoping for a new degree every 10 years). Ha, I'm never going back to college, but I keep on learning every day.
