Gary's Story
My main "gig" is teaching music. I am an Orchestra Director, and string instrument specialist. I also remain active as a performer in a variety of music styles, but especially classical music, and jazz. (That photo of me is a PR photo for my jazz quartet.)
I completed my first degree in Music Education as a violin major with strings emphasis, at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1976, and then completed my Masters Degree in Violin Performance in 1987, also at I.U.P.
I started my teaching career in public schools in Pennsylvania, where I taught in Abington (suburban Philly) and Lock Haven (central PA).
In the 1980's I also taught as a Music Instructor at the collegiate level. I was Instructor of Applied Guitar and guitar classes at Susquehanna University, Lycoming College, and Mansfield University, and I was Instructor of Applied Violin and Viola and Director of Chamber Orchestra and String Ensemble at Lock Haven University. s well as maintaining a .80 teaching position as a public school Orchestra Director. (I'm STILL amazed that I somehow survived those years!)
At Bucknell University I also taught applied guitar in the summer program of the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts.
In 1988 I moved to Rochester, NY. I maintained my quarter-time position at Mansfield University, commuting there and teaching there for my first year in New York. After that I switched back to focus entirely on teaching full time in public school music programs in New York.
Currently I am an Orchestra Director/String Instrument Instructor in the Pittsford Central School District in suburban Rochester, NY. I still perform quite a bit too.
I have two wonderful, beautiful daughters, who are both going to be teachers! I'm sooooo proud of them!
