Gary's Story
Life
I would have never have guessed it but here I am living in Winnipeg. I have been in the Air Force since 1971 and look to retire in 2006. That is yet to be determined as I am still having a blast.
My career has been focused mostly on jet fighters and trainers. I lived for six years in Moose Jaw after graduating from RMC. It was then off to Europe for seven years and I got to fly the CF104. What a blast. I got married in '82 and the the kids arrived in '86 and '88.
It was back and forth to Germany and when we closed it down we moved to Cold Lake, Alberta. Five years there and here to Winnipeg.
I have taken an interest in training as well as flying. The training focuses on everything from leadership to organizational effectiveness, communication..in other words all the things that I don't do!
Workplace
After Eastview I attended RMC in Kingston then headed off to Moose Jaw to train as a pilot. In 1976 ...Expand for more
I was now ready to start working for a living. I stayed in Moose Jaw until '81 as an instructor on the Tutor jet trainer. Then life got real interesting!
I went to Cold Lake, AB, to cross train onto fighters. Once I was qualified on the CF104 I headed over to Germany. Aside from a brief two years back in Canada we lived in Germany from '82-93. What a dream.
When we came back to Canada it was to Cold Lake again although now I was flying the CF-18. In '98 we got posted to Winnipeg and have enjoyed it here since arriving. I do some flying on the King Air but my main job is as the Commander's senior advisor on flight safety. That entails a variety of things including teaching on safety management systems, leadership, communications, human factors, risk management, blah blah blah. Bottom line it is fun and I get a pay check.
I have three years until I can retire with a full pension (aargh) and after that, who knows?
