Gary's Story

Life After graduating from West Covina High School I began college at UCLA. I found that they did not offer the classes that I wanted so I transferred to Mt. San Antonio College. After graduating from Mt. San Antonio College I transferred to Cal Poly Pomona. After graduating from Cal Poly Pomona, I worked for the City of Monrovia as a youth counselor. I then went to work for the County of San Bernardino as a social worker working Child Protective Services cases. I began working as a police officer in the City of Covina, before joining the Santa Ana Police Department in 1975. At Santa Ana PD I worked uniformed patrol, traffic, drinking driver team, crime scene investigation, field training officer, directed patrol, Career Criminal Apprehension Program, Robbery, and Court Liaison before going to Auto Theft in June 1987. I continued working Auto Theft from that time until my retirement in December 2005. While working as an auto theft investigator, I worked two tours of duty working undercover as a member of the Orange County Auto Theft Task Force 1993-1996 and then again 2001-2005. From 1997-2000 I was a member of the Santa Ana Career Criminal Task Force. We were comprised of two officers from Santa Ana PD, two officers from the CHP, and two agents from State Parole. We were charged with removing parolees from the street and putting them ba...Expand for more

I am currently on the board of directors for the Western States Auto Theft Investigators Association, as well as being the webmaster for their website. I currently instruct at San Jose State University, teaching Vehicle Theft Investigation for Investigators; teach Vehicle Theft for Patrol Officers at numerous local police agencies; and have completed the California POST Commission's Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) Instructor Training Program. My instructing partner, Jim Hayes, and I were both recognized by the California POST Commission in 2006 for our "Instructor Excellence" at San Jose State. I am a licensed amateur radio operator and volunteer time with my local Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service and the American Red Cross Disaster Service. I am married and have two dogs that love to go on walks. Obviously I have no time for anything...
