Gary's Story

Life I was born in Casper WY and spent my pre-school years in Bismarck ND. I started 1st grade at Greenacres Elementary outside of Spokane in '56. I attended 2nd grade at Lowell Elementary in Tacoma, then 3rd grade at Wachter Elementary in Bismarck ND. 4th grade was in Riverton WY (Lincoln elementary?) and 5th grade in Halliday ND. We moved to Olympia in the 6th grade (McKinley Elementary). I went to Wash. JHS and Olympia HS ('68) I spent four years with the US Army Security Agency in Mass., Vietnam, and Washington DC area. Graduated from The Evergreen State College in '75 and the U. of Washington in '78, then again in '89. Have two kids, Bree and Eric, (30 somethings), Eric is in Boston, Bree is in San Francisco.; I've lived since '90 in the Portland/Vancouver area. I teach German and History in an International Baccalaureate college prep. high school. School The teachers who inspired me the most were Mrs. Mary Campbell (English/Drama) and Mr. Alan Stillman (Russian/Chinese). I suppose I would do it over again, although at the time I didn't particularly like high school and wanted it to be over. It wasn't unbearable though. I had friends from different circles and most of my peers were likable, good people. Funniest moments? Everyday in Drama! Also, sitting next to Bill Moos in German--we laughed all the time! Happiest moments? Graduation, of course! Craziest memories? 1.Spending Summer '67 studying Russian at the Univ. of Wash. and living in the Russian House. 2. Sitting in the cafeteria before school in my Senior year talking about who had received a draft notice. If I had a crush on anyone in high school, it would've been Lois Myers. We used to spend many days of summer at Capitol Lake together. She always had a great sense of humor. We never 'went' together, but she was one of my best female friends. As it turns out, they were right. I always wanted to be a actor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were right. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Chuck Lenky, because we were the best of friends and he was an important influence in my life.. I won the 7 state western regional roller dance championships in 1986. I've also coached my high school's World Quest (social science knowledge competition) to 3 first place finishes in the championships for State of Oregon and SW Washington over the last 8 years. When we didn't win, we placed in the top 5 every year. My oldest friend is Ian Andresen. We met in September 1962 at Washington Jr. High School in Olympia WA. We DIDN'T click at first, but then we were in Boy's Glee and together with Fred Dobler, we formed a folk group called the Westwinds, and we won a talent contest. Ian and I have been friends ever since.
