Gary's Story

I've been wanting to do a little bio of my days, and one of those I'd like to do is about the boat's we've built at some of the shipyards along with pictures of those. Mainly, I started out in the warehouse, computerized it's inventory, and then did a sister yard. From there I was Purchasing Manager for a few other yards. We've built shrimp trawlers, tug boats for NY Harbor, many Offshore vessels, with Rysco Shipyards in Blountstown, FL and RYSCO 'Rockport Yacht and Supply Company' out of Rockport Texas. I then went to work at Eastern Marine, in Panama City, FL and we built Offshore Supply Vessels, Car Ferrys, Navy Barges, and I was involved with the Empress Navy Barge which was a magnetic pulsating barge used to 'harden the electronics on Navy vessels'. From there I went to Freeport Shipbuilding and Marine Supply where we built and repaired vessels, from U.S.C.G. vessels and yachts (repaired). We built Houseboats, Diner Dining Vessels, true Paddlewheelers, and multi-million Yachts. Then ended at Halter Marine, Panama City, Fl (the old Eastern Marine Yard), where we built two Offshore Supply Boats. I spent 26 years doing everything it took, from bidding on contracts, material takeoffs, purchasing, setting up accounting, setting up computerized systems all while procuring materials to keep yards operating, to include office supplies, equipment maintenance and ordering all equipment f...Expand for more
or vessels. This also inlcuded subcontracting, to the extent of localized work on the yard, or on a vessel, even to the point of contracting tug boats to tow the Navy Barges to the west coast of California via the Panama Canal. I thought I had pretty much covered it all until in 2001, I went to work for the State of Florida in Purchasing for the Florida Lottery (5 years) then had the opportunity to go to Department of Management Services, Purchasing Department, where I retired last February because of health. But there, I was involved in bidding multibillion dollar contracts as a Lead Analayst, doing my first procurement for Training for Public Purchasing Professionals, the next one for procurement of Envelopes, Printed and Plain, and my last was for Vehicle Rentals, Cars and Trucks. I managed contracts for them for those and including Office Supplies, Library Materials, DHL and FedEx, Mail Services, and for a while Pharmacuticals. These contracts were availiable for any government entity, including cities, municipalities, airports, one hospital within the state and some, like the Training and Vehicle were allowed to be used by other states within the Continental U.S. If, you'd like to see any of my contracts, just Google my name and you should be able to find those and quite a few of some SPA's (State Purchasing Agreements), but the State Contract will be stated as State Contract.
