Gary's Story
My first day of high school.. first period, intro to computers(AppleII's): I sat in the back row. Incredibly shy, at least feeling that way inside, I was shocked to find myself immediately in a conversation with the very pretty girl that happened to be sitting next to me, on my left. She may have been the only girl in that class. A girl that was into computers was a very rare thing back then. I found out that her dad had one at home and she already knew a lot about them. And since there were only half as many computers as students in the room, when it came time to partner up, I do believe I actually walked up to the one she had already chosen and boldly said, as cheesy as could be, "Is this seat taken?" We spoke almost every school day for the next four years - sharing joys and heart-aches. The last day of class our senior year: she was the last person I spoke with on school grounds. I talked her into letting me take a couple of pictures of her; but, I lost touch and she's never seen them. I took those negatives to a photo shop this afternoon to be scanned to disk so that I can post them here for her to see. :)
I tried college a couple of times (I really loved St. John's College) but it didn't take.. I didn't know what I wanted and just wasn't willing to go through the motions for a piece of paper. I wanted inspiration.. and a clear vision.. and not so much debt without a definite way of paying it back. So, I ...Expand for more
went to work.. mostly with computers in some way or another; though I've spent plenty of hours doing residential construction and working in warehouses. In high school, when I took the SAT the first time I was hoping that it would give me an idea of which way to go between Art (writing/verbal) or Science (math) and wouldn't you know it.. I scored the same number of points in both! No help there.. I went with Science and Technology, because it came easy to me.. and money and working conditions were better.. I burned almost all the joy out of it working Technical Support for 2 and half years for MindSpring in Atlanta, GA. (The average life span of a Tech on the phones was 3 years in those days before they ran away screaming never to be seen again)... several more years go by in a very similar manner with various corporations and:
Now, I am working in Cumming, GA for a small tech company (I was employee #6) that started out of Athens, GA doing: Domestic and International Shipping/Receiving/RMA. I try not to spend so much time sitting at a computer as I use to..
But, I am starting to move more towards art - creating music, photography, writing... rambling.
So, to wrap it up for now: Never married, no kids, no pets of my own though I do like other peoples dogs and most cats and kids for that matter.
I have never forgotten what it was like to be five years old, and I promised myself then that I never would forget.
