Gary's Story

Life I grew up in downtown Los Angeles in the projects called Aliso Village. I lived there until I was 10, then moved to Compton where I attended Jr. High School. Our family then moved to La Puente where I attended Nogales High School. I graduated in 1971. After attending three different colleges, I graduated from UCSD in 1977. After that, I held various jobs, working as a salesman, clerk, lighting grip in Hollywood, recreation leader, coach, and finally illustrator and technical writer. I am currently a senior technical writer at QUALCOMM, Inc. in San Diego and have a wife and two wonderful boys ages 14 and 11. I've had my ups and downs like everyone else, so I can't complain (much). School I didn't enjoy myself very much in High school. I was picked on, and was generally unhappy. I couldn't hide either, because I was 6'8" my senior year. The only bright spot was when I joined the A Capella Choir in my junior year and the Photo Club in my senior year. Mrs. Flannery and Mr. Berteaux were the only sympathetic teachers I had. College I started my college career at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. I was on the Basketball team, where, in 1974 I became the Captain of the team, the team MVP, and led the league in rebounding and was fourth in scoring. I graduated in 1974 with a degree in Communications. I then went to ...Expand for more
Fullerton State College. What a debacle! I got a basketball scholarship, but got injured in the second game of the season and missed nine games. My coach thought I was "faking it," and subsequently dropped me from the roster. What a meat market! After 1 1/2 semesters at Cal State Fullerton, I was offered a spot on the team at UC San Diego. I jumped at the chance to change my fortunes - even if I didn't play basketball. UCSD had a reputation even then as a top-drawer university. I went to UCSD in the spring quarter of 1975. As it turned out, I was ruled ineligible to play basketball because I played my first year at Mt. SAC. I was not unhappy, though, because now that I was at UCSD, I found my niche. I persued a degree in Communications and enjoyed (and was challenged by) the high degree of scholarship necessary to graduate. I pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in the spring of 1976 with seven other resolute brothers. We crossed on April 17th, and I have been more or less active in the Fraternity since then, working with the undergrad chapter while in school, and later, working with the grad chapter in San Diego. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my college career. I am still working in my field. And from my offices in Sorrento Valley, I can look west across Interstate 5 and can still see UCSD through the eucalyptus trees and the fog...
