Gary's Story

Cindy and I move to The City of Hawthorne in 1991 to be close to jobs. I was working for Hughes Aircraft (later to become Boeing) at the time and she was working at the Hyperion waste water treatment plant as a Biologist. Just for reference, Hawthorne is about three miles South-East of LAX, near the 405 and 105 exchange. We have no kids, but a house full of animals. We are known around the neighborhood as ¿The Parsons Zoo¿. We just completed a major remodel of our house so it looks like we are going to stay put for a while. I am going on my 26 year working at Boeing/Hughes Aircraft. I really enjoy my work and the people I work with and actually look forward to going to work in the morning. Cindy currently works in downtown LA for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power in their Air Quality Division and seems to enjoy her job. She is very involved in the governor¿s greenhouse gas initiative and frequently travels to Sacramento to attend public hearings. I¿m currently working in the program office for a major satellite program. My job involves determining what caused an electronic component or assembly on a satellite to fail during ground testing. We actually go in and perform an ¿autopsy¿ on the failed part to determine the ¿Cause of death¿. I still find the job interesting after all these years, because each failure investig...Expand for more
ation is unique. I still enjoy sailing and have skippered several bareboat trips to the British Virgin Islands, Tahiti, and other Caribbean locations. I am also crewing on an Olson 30 racing boat where we race twice a week during the summer months. I am the foredeck guy which means I get the most wet of any of the crew and have the highest odds of going overboard. The skipper does take care of his crew at the yacht club after the race, especially if we win. I¿m not flying anymore. I found working at Boeing left little time to keep myself current. I was very involved in keeping a developer from turning Hawthorne Airport into another shopping mall and got written up in several national aviation publications. I just turned 50 in 2008 and suddenly have a lot more aches and pains than I did before I turned 50. I keep telling myself it is all in my mind, but my body tells me differently. I¿m still an active snow skier, enjoy going on long bicycle rides (i.e Canadian Rockies) and try to go to the gym on a regular basis. I am looking forward to retiring at age 60 and spending my time sailing, biking, traveling around the world or maybe doing some type of volunteer work. All I know is that I will not retire to the couch! Well that is my life story in six paragraphs. I look forward to hearing what you have been up to for the past 30 plus years.

This past Sunday I did a 54 mile bicycle ride to the top of Mandeville Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains and burned 3,400 calories over the four hour bike ride. Per my Garmin GPS I also set a new personal time record cl
