Gary's Story
Life
Just a quick update. I have moved back to Gillette. I know that is hard to believe, but it really is happening. I work out at the airport with the TSA. I have seen several people since being back and it has been great to catch up with those I have spoken to. I have been here since February and hope to have my family join me soon. I really am happy to be back and away from the bigger cities. I enjoy the "quiet" life that comes from being in Wyoming.
Please know that if you are at the airport please ask for me and I'll see what I can do to make some time before flying out to talk.
I am currently living in West Jordan UT (south of Salt Lake City). I graduated from BYU with a degree in Youth Leadership in 1993. During my time at BYU I served a church mission in England. Upon graduating I worked for the Boy Scouts of America in Reno NV. After a year and a half I left Reno and moved to Salt Lake City. I worked for Granite School District as a job coach for diabled young adults. I also started working part time for a local Chevy dealership as a night cashier and service consultant. When the school year ended I went full time at the dealership in the service consultant. I also started dating a friend from college at that time. We both worked at the dealership(in different departments) so we were able to do a lot of things together. I married Jennifer in March of 1995 and moved into our new home here in West Jordan. We have 2 children - William who is 10 and Arianna who is 3. I was let go from the dealership (downsizin) in December of 2005. I was hired by the Transportation Security Administration in May of 2006. I have been working at the airport here in Salt Lake since then.
We enjoyed the Olympic Games when they were here in 2002 and I had the opportunity to go to the Super G event. My son and I enjoyed the Olympic experiece and seeing all the people gather from all the corners of the Earth.
We enjoy everything we do as a family andwe miss the wide open spaces of Wyoming. We look forward to the day when we can move back up to Gillette.
College
Loved life at BYU. Started out in the fall of 1987 and got right to work on my major in Youth Leaderhip. It was fun getting involved right off the bat. It was one of the best years I had there. After the school year ended I took 2 years off to serve a church mission I was able to go to England. As such, I have a great love for the people there and especially those in the north (Yorkshire and Tyne and Wear). I returned to BYU for the winter semester of 1991 and picked right up where I left off. Although there were new people in the major I was able to get involved right away. I was fortunate enough to be a teaching assistant in several classes in the major (a leadership clas...Expand for more
s and the camping class). I also filled in several times when the Professor would get ill or have to take care of other personal items away from campus. I managed to finish my degree up in three and a half years, which is a full year sooner than most people finish. I received my Bachelor's of Science in Youth Leadership Administration with an emphasis in Boy Scout Administration, in the spring of 1993.
Workplace
I started working the summer after my 10th grade year. I worked for the Boy Scouts as a member of a summer camp staff in the Black Hills. I enjoyed teaching others the same skills I had been learning already. I did this for 4 straight summers (1985 to 1988). Between Aug. and Octo. 1988 I worked on a farm near Moorcroft. There's nothing like plowing fields for 10 hours a day watching the wildlife and pondering life's mysteries.
When I returned from my mission in 1990 I worked on the farm again before going back to school. Upon graduating from BYU I worked for the Boy Scouts in Reno, NV. I was based in Carson City and covered most of the central part of the state. I had an area that covered Carson City, Gardnerville, Minden, Fallon, Yerington, Hawthorne, Tonopah, Austin, Round Mountain, and the South Lake Tahoe area. I traveled between 3000 and 5000 miles a month doing the various tasks needed to get my job done. After letting the Boy Sccouts control my life 24/7 I got out and moved back to Salt Lake City. I hired on with the Granite School District working as a life skills/job coach for disabled young adults. I enjoyed this work a lot but could not get on full time with them. While working with the School District I started working part time at Riverton Motors as a night time cashier in the service department. During these late hours I learned how to do the Service Consultant's job. Because I was already trained, when the dealership had an opening I was promoted to fill the open position. I worked in various positions at the dealership during the 11 years I worked there. I started as the cashier, bacame a service consultant, dispatcher, back to service consultant, service manager, back to service consultant and finally the manager of the new car prep department. After working as the new car prep manager for four years I was let go due to downsizing. I left the company on very good terms with the management and still take my cars back for service work. I remained unemployed for 6 months while waiting for background checks to be completed before I started working for the Transportation Security Administration. I have been there since May of 2005 and love the work. Yes, working for the Government is fun (doesn't pay well but has great benefits). I hope that someday I will be able to transfer back up to Gillette to work at GCC.
