Gary's Story
Life
Went to Trinity College after NVHS, graduated in '74 and got married right away. Held off the family aspect for a long time, but 2 red-haired boys came along in '83 and '85. Stayed in CT; moved to beautiful Litchfield Co. in '84 and was there until 2003. Was a part-time Cape Codder until we sold the family home in 2002, but fond memories remain. The career brought me to the AZ desert in '03, and got divorced after 30 years of marriage to the wrong person. Just married the RIGHT lady (much choosier this time!) in Oct '09 and am now looking forward to the latest phase of my life. Many chapters yet to be written!
School
I was the undersized, late-developing, socially awkward kid who tried hard. Still can't believe those crazy split sessions freshman year - getting out of school at 5:28 PM??? And God-awful, freezing football practices at 8 am in November... yikes! Single most influential teacher without a doubt was Lynn MacMichaels... no wonder I chased raccoons out her attic...Expand for more
for her! Funniest teacher was Ralph Cobb with his sarcastic wit.
College
Had a hard time dealing with late-bloomer adolescent emotional issues, but persevered and got the degree.
Workplace
I'm a career laboratory guy... can not imagine any other engineering function. I've worked in materials, commercial nuclear power, Space Telescope, and jet engines... all socially redeeming and personally rewarding.
Military
In college I was draft bait freshman year, and was lined up with the Marines to pursue aviation with their Platoon Leader Corps program. A high number in the first draft lottery voided that plan. Nonetheless, the sacrifice our brothers made in Viet Nam has given me many episodes of survivor's guilt, and Yes, I have visited the wall and touched Randy's name. I salute those who served with honor - you have earned my respect and gratitude.
Pets
Three dogs now - two rescued Labs (Elvis in the photo) and a Wheaten terrier. Quite a circus every day, and a bedful every night!
