Gary's Story
I went to college because I wanted to be a part of the business world and was good at math. After 6 1/2 years (summer of 1991) I graduated with an accounting degree at a time when the big accounting firms were merging. My best friend at CSUN convinced me to take the Law School Admissions Test so we could apply to Law School and hopefully continue studying together. Well, he got into Harvard and I got into the University of San Diego. He graduated with honors and I graduated without honors in 1994.
In Law School I realized I liked the challenges of interpreting the tax code. I knew I did not want to spend time in a courtroom, so I thought about being a corporate tax attorney or a tax attorney with a large CPA firm. I took an estate planning course in my second year and was convinced that it would suit my personality and skills. I spent the summer after my first year of law school in the study abroad program in Paris. That summer I met a couple who ran a dive shop in the south of France on the Mediterranean. They asked me to come back the following summer and work at their dive shop, so I did. I got certified as an advanced diver while working for them.
After taking the bar exam I worked with my brother Dominic in construction. After passing the July 1994 bar exam I continued to work part time and also externed for a federal district court judge in downtown L.A. It took me about six to nine mon...Expand for more
ths to find my first estate planning job. Six months later I went to work for a medium sized estate planning firm in Torrance. After four years I became a partner. I left that partnership two years later to concentrate on high-net worth individuals. I then worked in an estate planning department of five attorneys within a firm of twenty-five or so litigation attorneys. We soon found out that litigation and estate planning attorneys do not always mix well. Four of the five of us started our own firm in 2004. I left that partnership after four years to start my own practice in October of 2008. I have been very busy ever since.
I got married in 1998 and it lasted almost 10 years. We are still great friends, we just stopped being great spouses. She takes care of our dogs when I go on vacation. I kept the house, dogs and cat and she started out on her own again.
I have been described as very outdoorsy. I like to hike, camp, backpack, mountain bike, rock climb, SCUBA, ski and snowboard. I am considering trying mountaineering in the next couple of years. I take my dogs for a short thirty minute jog at least three times a week. I don't like to run, but it is an easy exercise for them.
I still ride a motorcycle, but I now also have a car and an SUV. I am about the same weight as I was in High School and look pretty much the same. I am always the one taking pictures so I do not have many of me.
