Gary's Story

Left the "Chuck" in 1971 to avoid getting alcohol poisoning from the many great house and field parties. Moved to Vancouver where I could pass out on a park bench and would'nt freeze to death or get eaten alive by mosquitos. First year here shared a place with Stu Arnot, Denny (Thumper) Thompson and his girl friend. now wife, Gail. Partied with lots of old JP friends who were living in Vancouver at the time, Jim Ring and wife Lesley(Gibson), Linda Gibson, Glenn Foster, George Atkinson, Rick Lloyd and others. 1973 to 1975 lived in Victoria and met up with more JP friends, Wes Jantzen, Ron(Peanut) Dale, Susan Huber, John Turner, Brian McCarthur, Don Joinson, Rick and Bill Pettinger. Spent many years in electrial engineering then got into the charter bus business and recently retired after 16 years with BC Transit. Got married in 1983, unmarried in 1992 and presently maintain that status. I have 3 great kids, 2 daughters, 28 & 25, and a son 24. I Now spend my time travelling to Nascar races, car shows, Barrett-Jackson car auctions and tinkering on my 1969 Chevelle SS so I can cruise the "Dub" and do burnouts. Often go cruis'n with Rob (Lirch) Eilertson and his 1966 Nova SS. Regularly see Al Derkoch, Derryl O'Hare, Jim McClennan and Stu Arnot who are all living in Edmonton. Still keep in touch with many of the above mentioned people and reminisce about the old days. I recall, like a bad nightmare, Mr. Bibby yelling at me about my tardiness and poor attendance. I thought he was going into full cardiac arrest when his face went from passive pink, to raging red and finally to punichment purple. I was toast, the verdict came down; one month, less a day, in detention. On a good note, no paramedics were required for either party. Looking back, I should have told him the real reasons for skipping out;...Expand for more
I did'nt want to be an over-achiever, my abscence from classes was being fulfilled by getting a " hands-on" education at Storyland Valley Zoo, being that JP did not offer a brewmaster course I had to spend numerous hours of my valuable time at the Klondiker, Corona, Saxony, New West and Edmonton Inn as a stepping stone to learning this fine art, school was interfering with my pool game at Meadowlark, leisure time driving around in my '57 ford and watching old Audey Murphy dusters at Roy Cox's place with a 12 pack of Labatt's 50 ale, 3 for me and 9 for Roy. Miss the after school gatherings at Zeller's Skillet for fries and gravy with a cherry coke, hanging out at B/A Junction, Colonial Esso and Pacific 66 where I worked for awhile, bagging groceries at Meadowlark Safeway and making ice cream floats in the dairy cooler, cruising around with Rhonda Jones and Edwina Mierau in her black Rambler, great parties at Byron Marlin's and summertime fun at Hillcrest Country Club. Still have fond memories of all the good times; school dances, all-nighters at the Starlite Drive-in, grade 12 grad party at Bonnie Barrigan's, racing around the football oval in Bill Bonnello's corvair and almost rolling it, dances at Rainbow Ballroom, Alberta and Ma-me-o Beach with Mel Degan and the Lords, Barry Allen and Southbound Freeway and Wes Dakus and the Rebels, raiding Ross Shepard dances and the persuing rumbles, a trunk load of 8 track tapes amongst the empty beer bottles, pine air fresheners hanging from the mirror, not to forget the all important sex lights under the dash and always ending Friday or Saturday night with the last pass through the JP A&W. Great times had by all and we survived it. Has anyone heard about an upcoming reunion, if so, please contact me. Keep well my friends and may the "Schmoo" be with you.
