Gary's Story
After AHS I spent a year in South Carolina to visit family and came back to King County in late 1993. On Christmas of 1993, while having dinner with friends at the Auburn Way N Denny (RIP) I got a wild hair up my arse and decided that I wanted to go to Europe on the government dime and joined the US Navy a few weeks later in the spring of 1994.
Some of you thought i had gone crazy. Several of you never imagined i would make it past bootcamp. Apparently, expectations were low across the board. For what it was worth, i kept my fingers crossed and it worked. The Navy and I were a great match.
Upon completing basic training in Orlando, followed by training at the Defense Photography School located at NAS Pensacola. In late 1994, I reported for duty on board the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65) where I served as a P...Expand for more
hotographer's Mate Petty Officer Second Class. While serving in the USN, I took part in military operations in the Med/Adriatic Sea and Persian Gulf in support of both NATO and UN peacekeeping missions.
After separating from the Navy, I returned home to Auburn but only stayed for 18 months before moving to Chicago with my then partner, Renee. After spending two years working and living in the northside of the city, I enrolled at Columbia College Chicago with a major in Fine Arts and a minor in Art History.
With the recession complicating my plans to pursue my MFA in Art Conservation, I instead returned to Tacoma and started a small arts related business featuring handmade crafts, body art and eclectic jewelry. Four years later, I moved the business to Honolulu where I lived outside Waikiki until 2014.
