Gary's Story

My name is Gary Worry. I graduated from Belle Vernon Area High School in 1969. In December of 1972, I completed my B. S. in Chemistry from the Pennsylvania State University. In April of 1977, I completed my PhD in Chemical Physics at the University of Illinois in Urbana. My thesis was theoretical in nature and dealt with determining the reaction rates for molecular beam experiments. I also extended Marcus Theory of electron transfer reactions in condensed media to include ionic effects using integral equation methods of modern statistical mechanics. My thesis advisor was Professor Rudolph Marcus, 1992 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry. My work after graduate school has been mostly in the paper industry. I worked in R&D organizations for the following companies: Union Camp Corporation, Scott Paper Company and James River Corporation which became Fort James Corporation in 1997. Fort James Corporation was purchased by Georgia-Pacific Corporation in 2000. Georgia-Pacific Corporation was eventually purchased by Koch Industries in 2005. My work in these organizations dealt with developing new and improved paper towel and tissue products. I have an in depth knowledge of both product and process development as related to towel and tissue products; I'm an expert in patent literature. I also hold about 15 or so patents. In 2000, I advanced to Senior Research Fellow, the highest technical level at GP-Koch. In October of last year, I ret...Expand for more
ired after nearly 30 years in the paper industry. I also served as Adjunct Professor for Wood and Paper Science at the University of Minnesota for 5 years, until I retired from GP-Koch. Now, I mostly spend time with my wife and our family. My son and daughter-in-law are expecting a daughter in the fall. My wife and I travel and visit family. My wife and I have traveled worldwide to Brazil, Germany, France, England, Belgium and Italy to name a few countries we visited. I read extensively on mathematics. I like to read about older math with Euler, Cauchy, Riemann and Fermat being my favorite mathematicians. I also read about science as it unfolded in the early half of the twentieth century. My favorite scientists are Fermi, Bethe, Einstein, Planck, Bohr, Heisenberg and Schrodinger to name a few. Playing and understanding the mathematics behind card games also takes up some of my free time. Finally, I read extensively on finance; I'm studying the mathematics of Modern Portfolio Theory. In the near future, I hope to learn Game Theory. Game Theory is the mathematical theory used to analyze strategic behavior, i.e., how people behave when placed in competitive situations. It was invented by John Von Neumann, Oskar Morgenstern and John Nash. I love surfing the Internet. A great deal of my time is spent honing my skills preparing French and Italian cuisine. It seems that I'm busier in retirement than when I worked fulltime.
