Gary's Story
Life
Spent most of the past 20 years working in Silicon Valley. Living in mountains between San Jose and Santa Cruz since 1988.
House was ruined in 89 Loma Prieta earthquake. Rebuilding took 18 months and finished in 1995. No insurance. Ouch!
Played a lot of garage blues/rock and bluegrass jams and occasional coffee house or party gigs on bass (mostly), mandolin, and guitar. Wrote stupid songs about ants and dancing in the laundromat.
Have been to two total solar eclipses, Cabo San Lucas in 1991 (incredible) and Compiègne, France in 1999 (cloudy, but the éclairs weren't bad).
Got married in Los Gatos in 1997.
Everything that came before pales in comparison to twin boys born May 6 2003! My first kids. What a trip!
College
Went to DVC one year.
Went to UC Davis one year.
Went to Stanford 2.5 years.
Graduated finally. That was enough!
Workplace
My first job after college was at Ampex where I wanted to do audio design work but instead did magnetic recording research for video recording and also worked on computerized video editing equipment.
After that I went into the music business for 4 years, designing co...Expand for more
mputerized sound processors for electric guitar and bass. That was probably the most fun I had at work since I could play the guitar all day. We also got tickets to see bands fairly often and got backstage passes for all sorts of hip and happening shows like Pink Floyd, Rush, Bob Dylan, Tower of Power, Hot Tuna, Jerry Garcia etc.
That came to an end then I did design and product development for a few companies that made sound cards for PCs. I also did some consulting work on videoconferencing products and was unemployed for about 6 months in 1997.
After that I worked for 3 years at a place that does pay per view movies for hotel chains. Got to play lots of video games and watch adult films all day at work, which was a little strange.
The next 4 years I managed various projects having to do with wireless networking. The ingrates laid me off in 2005.
Since 2005 I am working at a place that makes a product to let you watch TV on your wireless laptop. Ironic how much time I have spent in the video industry, I don't really watch very much TV.
Well it's not backstage passes for Pink Floyd but it pays the bills.
