Gavin's Story
Well, I kind of took awhile to find myself after high school. Or at least find out what I wanted to be when I grew (grow) up. But I finally decided that marketing was my passion. And I do love it, the research, the analysis, the strategy, the planning. . . even the number crunching I have to do when I am trying to figure out how much I need to price a product and how much I have to sell to make a profit. I hope to do this sort of stuff the rest of my career.
After several colleges and career paths- I graduated with a Bachelor's in Biblical Studies and was in ministry for a few years- I wound up in sales and marketing. I spent about 10 years in Atlanta at a couple of different schools, finally graduating from Atlanta Christian College in the mid 90's. I moved to Charlotte a couple years later to go to Seminary. I decided against spending 3 full years and a small fortune to get my Masters and then another 3 to 4 years and another tidy sum of money to get a Ph. D., only to have to scrape and claw to find a decent paying job and make tenure at a University. Instead, a decided to pursue business and marketing, which is what I found myself doing in the non-profit ministries I was serving at the time.
So, I went back to school and started pursuing th...Expand for more
is new path. I got a job with Chick-fil-A (a phenomenal company- my wife works for them too) marketing for some local units here in Charlotte. I earned a couple of business certificates in management and marketing at the state's largest community college, Central Piedmont Community College (whom I also worked for during my co-op). I currently consult for a start-up law firm and do some outside sales and marketing for Chick-fil-A. And I am still taking classes, prepping for an MBA. I am taking classes at Cal-Berkeley and UNC-CH and will enter an MBA foundations program at UMASS this Fall (2008). If all goes as planned, I will start the full MBA in 2009.
I would like to stay in professional services marketing because it is challenging, rewarding, and the perks are nice. But I have also had a long-time desire to own my own business. Perhaps after doing this a few more years and earning my Master's I will start my own consulting practice. Or maybe even go into financial planning- another interest of mine- as long as I get to keep putting together the business strategy and the marketing plan. Whatever I end up doing, I know that I will have the support of my wife and 3 beautiful children and I am very thankful for that. I look forward to the journey.
