Gay's Story
I am the former Antoinette Gay Winiker and lived at 421 West Main Street across from Averette College for most of the 18 years I lived in Danville. Attended Forest Hills elementary school then GW junior high and 2 years of high school then transferred to Stratford Hall for my junior and senior years, where I was a cheerleader and member of the Blazer Club.
I went to Mary Washington College the fall of '60 and then during my 2nd semester of my freshman year, 3 weeks after my 18th birthday, I married a "damn Yankee". We literally didn't have a "pot to pee in" for quite some time. Just before my 23rd b'day, our oldest son was born in York, Pa. Our #2 son was born in Wilkes-barre, and the a few years later our 3rd son was born in Abington, Pa. ALL yanks!
In 1971, I became aware I had a serious drinking problem, but continued down that road until the summer of '79. If I hadn¿t gotten pancreatitus, I might have just died or gone insane. I deep...Expand for more
ly regret the damage my drinking may have done to my children. However, I shall also never forget the day I fell in love with LIFE 9/6/79 in an AA room and began the road to recovery.
ONE thing happened that I totally did not expect:I KNOW God exists, as on that day HE came down to the gutter where my soul had fallen and lifted me onto that new path. (I realize that sounds rather dramatic but then it WAS!) Things were not all cookies and cream just because I had stopped drinking, but now I knew I wasn¿t alone. He walked with me and He talked with me and in September of this year, I celebrated 30 years of sobriety with HIS help and the program of AA. I had a lot of work to do on me, still do for that matter. The big change is now I know where to go for answers and am no longer looking for them at the bottom of a bottle.
I have been married 48 years, have 3 sons, 2 grandsons and live in Florida just north of Tampa. God Bless you all!
