Gayle's Story
Life
I can't say that I have changed very much from school, other than that i have a different outlook on the world. Living in a crowded country really changes your perspective. Working 6 days a week with children that barely speak English was another challenge, but ultimately it is the best thing I have ever done.
I've found the easy life. Not too easy, mind you. I'm back in Korea teaching in the public school system. Much easier than the private afterschool academy. Much fewer teaching hours. Earlier hours so you can do something in the evenings, and no Weekends. I also get more vacations, more pay, and more benefits. Who can complain about that? Only difference is class size. There used to be 10-13 kids per class, now i'm looking at 40ish... +/- 5
It can be insane sometimes, but the kids are great, and i only have to prepare about 3 lessons per week, since teaching 2 grades, you just repeat the lesson from class to class...
I'm feeling much more relaxed, comfortable and in my element. Slowly the language is becoming easier, vocabulary growing. ...Expand for more
I am quite happy with where I am in my life today.
School
I'm not sure exactly what everyone expected me to do after school finished... but i'm sure it wasn't to move to Korea and teach English. For one thing, I hated children. Also, I was told many times that I should be doing something in the arts like music or such. But I wouldn't change a thing. Korea is fantastic, the kids are great, and I've found a place where I can feel very comfortable and relaxed while making a decent living. Who can ask for more?
College
I was a bit invisible in University, since I lived off campus for the whole time and I was in perhaps the smallest department at the UofA. The Italian Department didn't have many majors, and I generally saw the same 10 students in all of my classes. I can't say that I made any friends that I've stayed in touch with, but there were a few that I really got a long with and genuinely miss today (Group from Vico class 1999, Donald S., and Nathaniel D.). So if you find me and remember me, drop me a message, I'd love to here from you all.
