Eugene's Story

Summer 1936, our family moved from Yoakum, Texas, to Needles, as father was employed as a trainman for the Santa Fe Railway. I was three years of age and brother, Weldon, was eighteen month. K thru 12, graduating in 1951. Two activities stand out during my high school years. First, I loved the Boy Scouts and set a goal to become the first Eagle Scout in Troop 57. I did it! The second, in Jr. High I was determine to graduate from college. However, during my Junior year, in a Chemistry Class taught by Miss McConnell, I do not recall what I did, but she interrupted class and questioned me about my future plans. I said after NHS I would continue on to college. Miss McConnell stated, "ha, your not going to complete high school and will go to work for the railroad". I fooled Miss McConnell. After my military service during the Korean War, I used the educational GI Bill, and graduated from San Diego State University with a B.S. Business Management, 1958. 1957 Fall Semester at S.D.S.U., I was a Senior and living in my Sigma Pi Fraternity House and Marlla Lyons, a Sophomore, was living in her Delta Zeta Sorority House, across the street. We both were in an afternoon Ballroom Dancing Class(real tough college class). Boy, after several classes, it hit me and I said, "she is the one". In Sept. 1957, we began walking home together after class, and August 29, 1958, we were married and celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary, August 29, 2013. We had three daughters and one son. We lost Tom in 2007. As a proud father, pleased say all four graduated from college. Marlla returned to school, when living in the Denver Area, completing her remaining two years in 12 months, did he...Expand for more
r student teaching during Summer School, and became a Kindergarten teacher. I had a commercial insurance career beginning in San Diego. From San Diego, moves took us to San Francisco, San Bernardino, Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Denver, Newport Beach, and back to San Diego. My training/promotions were: Field Auditing, Safety, Marketing Rep., Home Office Insurance Accounting, Workers' Compensation Claims Manager, Marketing Manager, V.P. Sales Manager, Rocky Mountain States Regional Director, and Sr. V.P. Sales Director. During retirement we lived in Payson, AZ, Redlands, Ca. and lastly, 1668 Ametista Rd., San Jacinto, Ca. 92583, Tel. 951-487-3230. Marlla taught in Colorado, Arizona, and retired after fourteen years teaching kindergarten at Alpine(Ca.)Elementary School. Ups and downs, like everyone else, but a good life. My business career exceeded my Needles expectations. Marlla, raising four children, returning to college after three had graduated, and completing her education, with all "A's", really something else. In our Senior year, Mr. Minter, a former WWII Naval Officer, told the class about foreign countries he visited when in the military. I thought, Wow!, that is something and wish I cold do something similar. Well, as life worked out, we would spend summers is Europe when Marlla was off teaching and Spring Break in New Zealand, Central America, etc. Enjoyed many cruises, Alaska, Panama Cannel, etc. And, through out the U.S. We are a Christian family and God has certainly led us through some challenging hurdles. We have been members of either Presbyterian and United Methodist faith, making a choice from city to city with our moves. Health and Peace to all.
