Gene's Story
Life
We have six children (3boys & 3 girl-all grown but one), and six grandchildren so far (one each). We have lived in the El Dorado County for the past 31 years come August. A few years ago I got some bison calfs, and raised them.I also have had horses for some years.
After the Marine Corps, I worked with the SP Railroad Police for 25 years (retired), and then worked as an Investigator for a Law Firm in Sacramento for a couple years. While with the Railroad Police I met Norte Alumni at different times over the years. Originally, Dean Green, Ray Hogge, and later on Jack Edgar. Dean and Ray went on to other careers from the railroad, and also Jack Hayden was with SP.
I attended Norte's all class picnic at Woodlake Park in August of 2002(?), and Norte 64's 40th Reunion this past summer (2004). All of us said everyone has changed (aged)except us! These reunions were a blast seeing old friends, and starting some new ones.
In retirement I have enjoyed being involved with, and holding office in v...Expand for more
eterans organizations such as Veterans of Foriegn Wars (VFW) and the Marine Corps League (MCL). In the MCL we are heavly involved in the Toys For Tots Program, Eagle Scout Court of Honor Presentations, and other veterans/community programs. Above all else we are there to help our fellow veterans, returning veterans, and their families in any way we can.
Military
I was in U.S. Marine Corps for four years. Boot Camp was at San Diego, California. First I was a radio operator with the 11th Marine Regiment (Artillery) at Camp Pendleton (Oceanside, Ca.). I then was assigned with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, and we trained, and put on demonstrations for foreign military leaders, for 9-10 months. Then we went to South Vietnam, via Phillipines (Subic Bay), during 1966. While in Vietnam I went on R&R in Hong Kong. After finishing my tour in Nam I came home, via Okinawa. After I was home on leave, I finished my enlistment in April 1967 at Camp Lejuene, North Carolina, and came home to Sacramento.
