George's Story

Well here we go. I'm basically a newlywed. We were married in June of '08 in an outdoor ceremony by a babbling brook in the Adirondacks. I filled a whole B&B with my family and friends and made it into a three day event. It was what both Diana and I wanted. Not a three hour wedding but a weekend gathering of the people that mean the most to us. It took me 44 years to find the right woman but when I finally did she was my match.I knew it instantly when I saw her picture on Match.com. Maybe it took her a while longer but for me it was instant. I live vicariously through her children and 3 grandchildren (she's only 40 though) since I've never had any of my own. All of the sudden I'm being called grandpa !! As far as me I'm a master carpenter/ cabinet maker who's been self employed for the last 15 years. Most of my work is based out of Westchester and Manhattan. Very much high end work. I am very lucky to live and work around such wealthy clients. I count among my clients a few actors, sports stars and musicians. NYC and it's suburbs are a great place to work. I am one of the lucky few in life who really enjoys going to work everyday. I can stand back almost everyday and see the results of my day. It satisfies a very much needed creative part of my personality. After many years of carousing around, following the Grateful Dead, traveling and partying I finally buckled down eight years ago and got sober. It changed my life. I do have an occasional beer at a wedding or on vacation now but I enjoy life and it's simple pleasures more and more every day. We reside in Ulster County NY amid a slew of apple and fruit farms. It reminds me of Yorktown when we were kids and teenagers. Less people, less houses, less traffic, a smaller community atmosphere. The commute sucks every day but I get ...Expand for more
to see the Gunks all the time and am on a first name basis with the family who run the farmers market down the road. I'm a huge Giants fan. I bleed Blue every Sunday. Diana allows me this simple pleasure for 16 Sundays every year without any interruption. She has actually even watched a few games but it's more my thing. Right now Diana and I travel and camp as much as we can. Her children are grown and out so we live like teenagers. Our latest places are in the Pacific Northwest. We love the Oregon Coast and might actually retire there someday. This year we're returning to Glacier National Park in Montana ( spent the last two nights of our honeymoon in a lodge at 7000 ft that you must hike four miles to and is supplied by mule train.) This time we're backpacking for 8 days before hiking over the Continental Divide and staying at one of the grand lodges. Then we head to Canada for a sightseeing ride back to Spokane for our flight home. We own a small pop-up and go camping about 5-7 times a year. Mostly within three hours of home. We love Gettysburg (I'm a Civil War buff who should be a tour guide), the Catskills, Poconos, and Adirondacks. We'll take it and go see a concert or festival and camp the nights in between. All in all I have a good life. My parents are still kicking, my older brother Rich lives 20 minutes north and I see him all the time. My brother Lou and Sis Marilee both live in Seattle now but I keep in touch. Someday I'll get the gumption and see if I will show up at an '82 reunion. I really would like to see a St. Pat's one someday but who knows ?? If you took the time to read this blather thanks, if you were my friend , acquaintance or co-worker from my youth than you know what a complete jack-ass I can be but thanks anyway.
