George's Story

The story that I can write of the things I have experienced can be told in an exciting or a boring manner. For the purpose of this website, I am going to write a brief recap for anyone whom cares to read it. After high school I took the summer and relaxed like most everyone else getting ready to go to college. The only difference is that when September rolled around, I wasn't busy learning my way around some new college campus, I was getting woken up at 3 or 4 in the morning and being yelled at for something that was no ones fault. That's right, I joined the navy. And those first few days, you really had to remember or you would wonder where the hell you were. Long days of push-ups, running, and pointless work followed until December when I left and went to my first navy school. Then I spent the next year and half being trained on how to operate a nuclear reactor. That's right, more school, just like everyone else, just at a pace most people would hate. I finished my nuclear training just like every navy nuc, except that after my training I went the Naval Academy Prep School. But of course, I decided to leave the prep school and join the fleet. This choice was partly chosen due to the love of my life at the time. Either way, after my short stop at the prep school, I was stationed in Norfolk, VA onboard the USS Oklahoma City (SSN 723). Here is where I got my first real taste of the nuclear ...Expand for more
navy and shipboard life all around. I was there from 2000 to 2003. I spent lots of time at sea (80% or so of 2002), was engaged, then heart broken, and all sorts of other things as I qualified submarines and other such stuff. In 2003 though, I got my break from VA and transferred to Groton, CT. Some might not consider this much of a break, but it was closer to home for me. I was thrilled about this for a couple of reasons, but the only one I'll bring up here is that I was closer to my family. Upon getting back to CT, I was stationed on the PCU Hawaii (SSN 776). What was to be the newest submarine in the fleet, and the third Virginia class submarine. It was pretty neat all in all. Got to see the newest technologies in the navy and be part of building up a submarine crew from nothing. Other things in this time period that are worthy of note are that I bought my first house, and then in October of 2006 I married my wife. Pretty significant things in a person's life I would say. Then finally, in December of 2007 I transferred off of the USS Hawaii. I took thirty days of paid vacations and after a bit of rest I transferred to PMT New London for my first shore duty. So now, I've been in the navy almost ten years, I'm married, have a house, and fairly soon I'll have actually finished my bachelor's degree and may even start of my master's in Engineering Management. We'll see if I'm that ambitious.
