George's Story

Life After graduation in 78 went into the army of which I completed 2 tours in West Germany a tour at Ft, Hood where I met my 1st wife and had two children a son and daughter (twins)and a tour at Ft, Riley, Kansas where I met my 2nd wife of 20 years. She works for DEFAS as a GS 12. I got out of the army and joined the National Guard and also became a Weapon systems Repair Technician for the Guard in Kansas then Oklahoma doing weapon and NBC systems repair and was promoted to Sergeant 1st class SFC. I'm now a weapon system inspector and repairer in the Indiana National Guard. 2003 Mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Was on emergancy relief for 1 month in 99 in Oklahoma City after twister hit in May, in New Orleans for 2 months after Katrine hit golf coast Aug 2005. Our shop in Indiana had been working 12 hr shifts for almost 2 months to ensure mobilized Were now working on equipment coming back. My daughter came to live with us and graduated 8th in her class of 2003 making the Who's Who in America's High Schools 4 years in a row. While I was mobed to go to Iraq daughter came in and told us she was joining the Air Force and went into computer security work and programing and she is now promoted to Ssgt and is starting her 9th year of service and just returned from a tour of duty in Southwest Asia. My son is working full time at COSTCO in Grapevine Tx and has been working there for 7 years and is that stores top charity fund raiser.My oldest daughter (my kids 1/2 sister their mothers first child of another marrage) who still calls me dad will get her bachlers degree in elementry education and will be working for the Texas educatin system and has a wonerful son and daughter and they call us their Indiana grandparants. Never thought we'ed become a SUV and pick-up type family. Something I was not realy ready for and that is retirement from the military so I have to find something to do for pocket change and keep ocupied doing something. I shoot compitetion black powder, hunt and do civil war reenacting, was a 1st responder/firefighter for a small Oklahoma town volunteer fire dept until move to Indiana. Also during my time in the active army I was a member of those posts Pro Rodeo team in bareback bronc,saddle bronc and tryed bull riding but took to fighting bulls as a bull fighting comidy clown instead. Workplace The time I have in the military both in active duty and the national guard have been good to me! With over 32 years of duty to this great nation to protect our way of life and freedoms. I started as a private and now promoted to Sergant first class (SFC). 3 years as a tractor/trailer operator in West Germany. 9 years as a tank turret repairman on M60/M60A1-A3 tanks to the M1/M1A1 Abrams tank aswell as the M2/M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV). 19 years and counting as a weapon systems repairman on weapons from the M9 9mm pistol to the M102 105mm towed Artillary. Ive worked in regular army Maintence units at 2 sites in West Germany, 1 at Ft Hood, Tx,1 at Ft Riley,Ks.Worked in national guard maint, units & shops Maint unit in Manhatten,Ks, Combined Support Maint Shop(CSMS) in Topeka, Ks & Maintenance and Training Equipment Site (MATES) at Ft Riley,Ks then transfered to Maint units and shops in oklahoma. Maint Co. in Ada, Okla, CSMS in Norman, Ok, F.A Bde maintenance section in Enid, Ok, Maintenance Co. in Oklahoma City, MATES at Ft Sill. I am now at the CSMS #1 in Indianapolis, IN. as a weapons Tech and assigned to Joint Forces HQ as a COMET Inspector where I am now employed. Military Went to Basic training at Ft, Dix, NJ Jul-Sept 78. Then to Technical training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD Sept-Nov 78. Where I became a Tank Turret Systems Repairman. 1st duty base was Mainz, West Germany with 708 Maint, Bn 8th Inf, Div, Nov 78-May 83. Also while there picked up the job skill 64C Tractor/trailer operator with 85,000 miles accident free driving. 2nd duty base 190th Maint Co. 13th Support Command, Ft Hood Texas May83-Dec85. 3rd duty base was 299th Fwd Spt Bn 1st Inf Div Fwd at Boblingen (suburb of Stuttgart) West Germany Dec 85-Dec 87. 4th duty base was 101st Fwd Spt Bn, 1st Bde, 1st Inf Div Mech at Ft Riley, Kansas. Dec 87- Sept 91. 5th Duty 169th Fwd Spt Manhatten, Kansas with Kansas National Guard Oct 91-Dec 95. 6th Duty 1120th Maint Co, 345 Corps Spt, Ada, Oklahoma Dec 95-Sept 2002. 7th duty HHB 45th Field Arty Bde Hq, Enid, Oklahoma Sept 02- to April 2005.8th duty Transfer to HHC 700 Fwd Spt Bn, 45th Infantry Brigade as Armament Maintenance Sergant with promotion to Sergant First Class(SFC). This duty may be temporary due to BRAC has wife's office at Ft Sill, OK. closed and have been in Indianapolis, IN. 9th assignment was motor sgt for 138 Quarter Master Co. Indiana 10th assignment was Co- 252 Ord Co. as second sgt. 11th assignment was Armament section chief/ NCOIC of Det-2, 252 Ord Co. 12th assignment is JFHQ-IN as a COMET Inspector. Now have been in Indiana for 6 years. I will be retiring from the National Guard with 34 years of active service and 20 of that as a weapons maintenance technician. Sept,to Nov 2005 relief duty in New Orleans with HHC 700 Spt Bn Okla. From 79-89 I was active in the Pro Rodeo circuit as a post team member and qualified for the 1982 military finals in Yuma,Az. split 1st place in saddle bronc with a MasterGunnery Sgt from 29 Palms. April 2010 with a civil war reenactor friend for 10 days went to be extras in the remaking of the visitors center film at Shiloh, Tenn, It was wet, cold but had a good time and made some good friends down there. The film was shown at the 150th anniversary of the battle of Shiloh and we are in the march from the river, I'm seen moving boxes at Pitsburg landing and we are part of the barial detail using our muskets and a blanket as a strecher.
