George's Story
Since graduation, I've bounced around quite a bit. I've worked in private industry, the government and now I teach High School. This year I was appointed the VP for our school. I've taught in Northern Manitoba and now in Nunavut. If you cannot make out the pic, it is a herd of musk ox I encountered at the end of November 2008.
Every year I apply to our local HTO for five musk ox tags for students who have never shot one. This year our students were able to harvest two. I am very proud of Kenneth and Luke. I have added three pictures from the hunt.
My wife and I built a house in a small village near Winkler. It is called Gnadenthal. This will be our summer home until we call it quits up here. Then it will be back to Manitiba for good.
Well, another school has started up here in the Arctic. It is hard to believe that we are into our 12th year now. We came up here, in 2005, with the intentions of only spending a couple of years. So far we have been able to establish annual caribou ...Expand for more
hunts for the grade 7-12 classes. This is the 2nd year that we have been able to secure 5 musk ox tags for the school. These will be used to get some students their first kill. This year our big projects will be constructing a kayak using traditional tools and covering it with either caribou or seal skins. We will also be working with and elder to teach a few students how to make drums with caribou skin heads.
This year I received quite the surprise. One of my students nominated me as the teacher that made a difference in their life. This was in a territory wide competition. I was announced as the 2017 grand winner. I won two tickets anywhere that First Air flies!
The excitement just keeps happening. Last Sunday my wife and I welcomed our fourth granddaughter. Can not wait to see her!
Well, just made the big decision. My wife and I will be returning to Taloyoak for one more year this coming August. At the end of May 2019, I will be retiring from here and heading back to Manitoba.
