George's Story
High school was a looooong time ago. During high school I was active in the band, choir and the Allen Park Presbyterian Church
After HS I attended the College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas majoring in Math and stayed active in the band & choir. I also kept busy with the student government and the theater program. I became the person that everyone went to for help on there project or to get things done. This resulted in the CSG creating a Outstanding Student Award to give to me for my service to the school. The next year it was renamed after me and is still given out.
After graduating I taught middle and high school math briefly in Arkansas and Nebraska.
Still identified too much as a student, so it was back to school. This time at the University of Arkansas to attend law school. Many who have ever attended law school will find a great similarity to getting a root canal with out the pain killer. Wised up after a semester and took theater classes for a year and a half.
Back to the job market I taught High School math and directed 2 shows at St. Florians HS in Hamtramck, Michigan during the next couple of years.
Back the grad school at Northwestern University this time for a year.
Substitute teaching in the downriver Detroit area and free lancing in technical theater for a year until I landed the position of Technical Director at Boarshead Theater in Lansing, MI.
This position was of major importance in my life for 2 reasons. One it was the first time I was employed full time as a Technical Director and it was directly responsible for my meeting Sue Smith, the love of my life.
In January of 1985 we were married and I became the instant father of a 16 year old daughter, Tina, and a 12 year old son, Patrick. Talk about jumping in ...Expand for more
with both feet.
Alternated between teaching high school math and doing tech teater for a couple of years until I was hired by Meadowbrook Theater as a carpenter from 88-93. In 1993 I left Meadowbrook theater and returned to the classroom teaching Math to aspiring machinists at the Focus Hope machinist Training Institute.
From most years from 1984 to 1993 I also worked part time as the TD at Okemos High School.
In January of 1993 Susie and I traveled to C of O for a theater reunion and production of Love Letters starring my very good friend Ardith Morris. It was my first time on campus in 15 years and the first time Susie could see the college and area that meant so much to me.
We came back from that weekend and decided to sell the house, quit the jobs and find a program to me to finally get my MFA in technical direction.
That fall we moved to Athens, Ohio as I enrolled in Ohio University. Two years, an internship and a summer stock gig later and I received my MFA and we were off to Chicago where I was the Scene Shop Foreman at the Goodman Theater from 97 to 99.
The plan when I went back to school was for me to eventually be a college technical director at which time Susie would have to finish her college degree. In 1999 I accepted the position of Technical Director/Production Manager at Rockford College in Rockford, IL. I remained in that position for 8 years, after the first 3 Susie received her BS in Psychology and is currently a county probation officer.
In August of 2007 I left Rockford College to be the Technical Director at Beloit College 15 miles north.
Both of our children are married and belween them have presented us with the 3 most adorable (no I am not biased) grandchildren in the world. A fourth grandchild in due in March of 2009.
