George's Story

George D Six, P.E. Manager - Retired AEP - Simulator Learning Center July 15, 2013 After graduating from Hempfield High School, Greensburg, PA in 1966 George earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from West Virginia University and is a Registered Professional Engineer (Retired). When the United States of America required his presence for two years after his 2S deferment ran out he was drafted. He declined to go to Canada, but researched all other options and decided to apply for a Science and Engineering (S&E) position before being drafted. His scariest moment was when the Marine Sergeant in Pittsburgh was counting off the new recruits… Army, Marines, Army, Marines, etc, etc. The Marines do not have an S&E program. Lucky as always, that big DI pointed at George and said - Army. After a lovely winter in basic training at Ft Dix, New Jersey, Engineers do not have a strong union like Lawyers and Doctors so he went in as a Private, he received his MOS of 01B2R and was assigned to Picatinny Arsenal in Dover New Jersey to design fuses for weapons. Some of the projects he worked on were the LAW, TOW and an anti-tank mine for the European front. There were 7000 civilians, 200 Officers and 60 enlisted personnel at Picatinny and George made sure every Officer saluted him. The Enlistees had more degrees combined than the Officers. After his service to his country George's career with American Electric Power (AEP) started at the General James M. Gavin Plant in 1973 as a performance engineer. Assisting with the start-up of two 1300 MW coal fired units and numerous plant assignments prepared him for a position in the Operations Department in 1983, and eventually gaining him the position of Operations Superintendent in 1987. He served in that capacity through the construction and initial operation of the Gavin SO2 Scrubbers. George’s Rotary experience began in June of 1975 when asked to attend a meeting of the Point Pleasant Rotary Club by Kenneth Boyles. Ken was a friend from college and owned and...Expand for more
ran the Western Auto Store in Point Pleasant. George served as the “Weakly Letter” editor, Secretary for three years and President 1983-1984. Was selected Rotarian of the Year twice and attended numerous District Conferences with District 7530. In 1995 George moved to the Simulator Learning Center as Manager. The Simulator Learning Center (SLC) provides training for AEP’s fossil fleet and power marketers. The primary responsibility is the education of fossil plant control room operators, but non-operator courses on power plant operation are conducted. This training is provided year round at the AEP - Simulator Learning Center located in St Albans, West Virginia. The SLC staff also provides assistance to fossil generation facilities in setting up training courses and delivering pre-packaged training material. Evaluating course curriculum and developing new course material is a continuous process. George was also responsible for the operation and maintenance of the eight fossil plant simulators located at the SLC. These simulators are used in fundamental, basic, and advanced courses to develop and reinforce the operating principals taught in the classroom. In 2004 George initiated the Power Plant Training program with West Virginia State Community and Technical College for AEP. This is a two year Associate Degree program to provide operators for generation facilities. George retired from AEP August 31, 2007. He remained active in the St Albans community as a member of the St Albans Rotary club until 2012. George has been a member of Rotary since June of 1975. He was a member of the Point Pleasant Rotary Club from 1975 to 1996. He then moved to the Putnam County Club, District 7550, from 1996 to 2001. He then joined the St Albans Club and then in May of 2012 returned to the Putnam County Club. He was president of Point Pleasant Rotary 1983-84 and of St Albans 2010-11. He is the District 7550 DCO ( District Communication Officer) and serves on the Putnam County club Board of Directors.
