George's Story

To all of you, that have come to look at my profile, HELLO, and thank you. Look up a little and it says "Remind them who you are and where you have been",........What a crock, How do I remind you who I am, either you know me or you don't.....The only way to remind you about me is to say that my father was the "FISH MAN", .....so much for my claim to fame...... WHAT HAVE I BEEN UP TO????? From graduation '67, to U.S.Army '69. out in '71, I went to the big city to make my fortune, (and missed). Then came back out here to the woods, bought 3 acres of land across the street from where I was raised as a kid, then I built a house, (all told I moved about 150 ft). I have been married twice, the first wife was with me for 14 years, divorced me and left with my best friend, and I still miss him, good friends are hard to find......the second wife and I were married for 21 years, but she passed away last November 2011, after a year long illness. Also, about a month ago March 2012, I lost my mother to a stroke , at the age of 90 years old. Since I am speaking about ill health, I probably should add that, I had a heart attack on 11 / 10 / 01 . Now the funny part was that, that day just happens to be the birthday of my 1st wife ( coincidence ? or evil spell....lol ). And to continue, I had my 2nd heart attack, on 4 / 6 / 07. Since that time I have been trying to get my health back, and I am almost there. I will never be the man that I turned out to be, medically speaking, but, I have lately been given a clean bill of health.......And just for informational purposes, I am sorry to say that about the middle of August, last year 2011, Richard Lehtonen passed away. Any questions, email me and I can fill in some of the blanks, as far as I know. As life goes on we all make choices. My life chose for me to become a tractor trailer driver, NO, not a cross country driver, I was at home every night, of course some nights were shorter than others, but still home every night, and I did that for 35 years.........At the same time, I was asked, by Richard Lehtonen, if I wanted to he...Expand for more
lp him restart the Boy Scout Troop, here in New Ipswich. My first reaction was NO WAY!!! I don't have time for that. Two days later I asked him what he had in mind. And two days after that he came to my house with a man from Boy Scouts of America, and needless to say two hours later they left.....with my name on the dotted line and my $7 in their pocket. Richard was the Scoutmaster , and I was the Assistant Scoutmaster. After a while, we had a problem with the transition, from the Cub Scout Pack to the Boy Scout Troop. So the answer was easy, I joined the Cub Scout Pack, as a den leader, and then the transition was a lot easier for the boys, since I was both a Cub Scout den leader and the Boy Scout Assistant Scoutmaster. And as a leader of Cubs and Boys in scouting, I came to a realization.......if you teach boys long enough, to become good men, then after a while you notice that you yourself, have become the man that you have been trying to teach the boys to be.....and YES I have become that man, As it turned out Richard Lehtonen, and I lasted about 12 1/2 years, as the Scout Troop was replaced with another. And after that happened , I stayed in Cub Scouts. I was either a den leader or the Cubmaster for a total of 25 years. And to continue, at the same time , Again Richard and I volunteered to the town's Emergency Management. Richard as Assistant Director and I was the communications officer, to man the radios. We were both trained as Ham radio operators, and we both were trained to take over and run the Emergency Operations Center if necessary, having taken most of the same training. And we did that for about 14 years. As it turned out I have had my Ham radio license for 22 years.....So in a time of disaster in the town of New Ipswich, Richard Lehtonen and I, George Standley were two of the people that they called to help to make things right again. Since I wrote this story I am sorry to add that my second wife of 21 years has passed away......she died 11-10-11, and I miss her....But as they say life goes on, and we all must cope.....and I am still here.......
